local knowledge?

local knowledge?

A pipebuddy of mine recently ...well a few months ago, paid £500 to Patrick O Hare from Belfast ( belived to have once resided at 18 gortnamona heights belfast BT11 8PG) for a chanter. he never received this despite numerous emails and comments posted on differing forums.

anyone know if Patrick O Hare is still alive, as i cannot imagine any other reason he wouldnt have sent the chanter. Aparently he is well known and runs reed making classes for NPU.

unfortunately he still owes my buddy a chanter or his £500 !!!

Re: local knowledge?

your friend isnt the first or last man that has happened to. if you live close to Belfast your prob best finding out where he plays, going there and confronting him

Re: local knowledge?

Re: local knowledge?

I last heard from him on the 19th so hes still kicking at that point , delighted with his new C whistle. Im sorry I have had no response as of yet when I pointed out to him that he was a subject of discussion on the | Forums, . I tried.
Could be a technical problem, or family problem so dont call out the lynch mob just yet eh.. In fact I notice your mate last was in contact with him on the 19th so Id say thats not a coincidence.

Re: local knowledge?

Also, I gather Paddy said that the chanter was being replaced, So IMO its best to assume this is the case. In that case, if you've never had a chanter made for you, rest assured it can take a long time. surprisingly long! who knows what happened to the original, maybe it was out on lend, the guy broke it lunched it out didn't return it... . So If Paddy says a chanter is being made for your friend, then three months is not so long at all.
Im just making suggestions , no idea but I do know very well that chanter making is a process that can not be hurried. If he is getting fed up of being hassled, and he wont want to hassle the maker, then That could explain the silence. .

Re: local knowledge?

seems like the Chanter was 'Surplus to requirements' !?

<i>Practice Set ( Chanter) for Sale

Postby Patrick O' Hare » Mon Aug 02, 2010 11:49 am
Hi Guys

I have for sale a practice set of uilleann pipes.
The chanter was made by Martin Crossan, the leather bag by Jackie Boyce and new bellows made by me. The chanter comes with the original Crossan Reed and a spare made by myself
The chanter is now surplus to requirements as my pupil now owns a Benedict Koehler chanter and is looking for a quick sale to replenish his finances !!
This is an excellent opportunity for those who wish to begin playing the UP's at a very reasonable cost with a quality practices set.

For those who are seriously interested i will e-mail a sound file and pictures of the set.

The bellows which are brand new come with a lifetime guarantee. The bag was also recently seasoned, but can be re-seasoned if desired. These bellows are identical to those played by John Mc Sheery and Francis Mcillduff from the band "At First Light"

The Cost is £700, however in the interest of a quick sale reasonable offers will be considered. It may be possible to purchase the chanter on its own for a negotiable price.

Re: local knowledge?

Exactly my point, it was out on loan to a student. If the first link in a chain breaks, the chain is broken.

Re: local knowledge?

Not looking good eh? What can I say.
Best I can say right now is that behind the scenes , action has been taken. What its result will be I cannot say. For everyone's sake I hope this is resolved ASAP.

Re: local knowledge?

Bit of an old thread, but here's an update. I should point out that it's now 2012, I never saw either the Chanter, or the £500 again from Patrick O'Hare.

I've recently emigrated to the UK however, so at least now I have the option of wandering down to one of the Bellows/Reed Making courses that Patrick O'Hare runs for the NPU and seeing him in person.

Trading standards have also been lovely enough to open a file on Patrick for me, and given I now live in the UK it'll be much easier to perhaps just sue him.

£500, a year or more later - still no Chanter from Patrick O'Hare :-/

Sad! Best of luck in sorting that out. If it has been a year, that's not unusual for an instrument. I hope you end up with a decent chanter instead of a court case...

Re: local knowledge?

Well, the chanter was ready to go apparently at the time, Patrick O'Hare just stopped responding to emails or enquiries about postage costs. I eventually posted a query in public at http://uilleannforum.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1562 but the thread promptly got locked, and I didn't receive any response to that.
I have the entire paper trail which I handed over to trading standards. After I initially paid the £500 pounds Patrick claimed that Martin Crossan was not happy with his early chanters and was replacing them for free, this to me sounded odd, but hey, I'm a newbie. Then there was various other excuses until it got to the point that the transaction was outside the period that Paypal would refund me, then at that point..... Nothing.
I was quite keen to have a go at learning the UP, I've been playing the GHB for almost 30 years and I wanted to step up to the next level, because as far as I can tell the UP make the GHB look simple, and learning the UP would have to improve my GHB playing, but it's not to be it would appear,
I'd love to get involved with the NPU, but if they make use of somebody as a teacher, who in my case appears to have cheated and stolen from me, well, in my opinion that doesn't reflect well upon them and I think I'd rather stay away.

Re: local knowledge?

Have you tried NPU as an intermediary? - to pres your case? The folks I've known there are good people and this is the sort of thing they wouldn't want to happen, either side of the transaction...

Re: local knowledge?

I just don't understand what possible motivation P could have ? 500 is not a lot ofmoney in one way ?why cause himself so much potential trouble for some pocket money he could pipe up in A few days? I know times are hard but...!
This kind of thing has a way of intruding into other parts of ones lifeas well . I can't imagine NPUwanting to be associated with this kind of behaviour? that's why I still think there must be an explanation!!! Though I hVe to agree it's not looking good.

Re: local knowledge?

To simplify explaining the whole ordeal I've just stuck up a webpage with all the emails back and forth etc.

http://www.piobaire.co.uk/Patrick-OHare/Patrick-OHare.html

and I don't understand what the problem is either. I haven't removed any of my address details as I've moved to the UK since then.
