Box Fix

Box Fix

Hey all.

I just threw a reed out on my Paolo-it's a two-coupler three-voice red Paolo. I've been getting a reed out of tune every so often. However, in this situation, I have a gig in two days. I don't have time to get it fixed. I know that one of the three voices is out of tune, but I don't know which one. What should I do?

Re: Box Fix

Figure out which voice is out of tune and avoid that one, short-term. Play the hell out of the box in each of the three voices and you should be able to work it out.
If it's a note that you can play around, you can use that voice if you can avoid the bum note - if the bad note is a C natural, you're fine for some tunes and note for others. If it's a D, it's likely you're out of luck.

In the longer term, it's probably best to have it fixed, I'd think.

Re: Box Fix

Is it out of tune on one coupler or both? This will give a clue as to which bank of reeds it's on. Have you tried opening up the box and blowing into the reed blocks? It could just be bit of dirt caught in the reed or a valve not laying correctly.

Re: Box Fix

You can work out which reed is at fault by following the suggestions above, also helpful is to take the treble grill off so you can see which pallet opens the bad note, that narrows it down to 4 reeds.

Its unlikely to be the low reeds so that narrows it down to three. Take out the two affected reedblocks and place masking tape over the vents for just two of those reeds, assemble and play the note. Repeat with only one reed taped off, and you should be able to work out which is the culprit. Put tape over the bad reeds vent hole, and you should be ok for your next gig.
