Programme was from Ballycastle and Dick's group were the only ones from the area. With the exception of one weird "pop" contribution from a lad from Ballymena all the rest were Belfast based. Why waste licence payers money bussing them to Ballycastle when there are plenty of suitable pubs in Belfast? At least there was a high traditional content in this one.
Of course I'm delighted to hear that yourself & ormepipes are able to pick it all up, loud & clear.
Pity that poor old Ed & Al can't access it.
It really is good to see so many wee country Pubs in these shows, many of them tucked away off the beaten track, in the back of beyond, getting a wee taste of the spotlight, for a change.
The fact is, there are many wonderful Pub Landlords out there doing a fantastic job supporting & promoting the music with some fantastic venues, so it's good to see their years of dedication being rewarded by these shows helping to raise their profiles, even just a little.
Thanks too to the Blas Ceoil team for helping to point out that good Trad Musicians really do exist up here ....... outside Belfast!
Like many who watch these shows, I'd probably prefer it if ALL the content were Trad, but at the same time I can see the value of mixing it up a little. After all, there's something to be said for not always preaching just to the converted!
Oh & just for the record, my 'friends' in those clips are:
Adrian Jefferies (Uilleann Pipes, Whistle, Bouzouki)
{ his website is down right now }
Paul McAuley (Bodhran)
{ http://www.irishbodhrans.com/ }
and
Jerry O'Donnell (Fiddle)
Yes Dick, we can receive it loud and clear down here in the South. A multitude of blessings on the Beeb for putting this on the iPlayer - I watch more BBC Alba and Northern Ireland than mainstream TV these days (not that that’s difficult).
This week's programme was especially good for trad. - I liked the harpist too.
For those who can’t see the iPlayer, there are some clips on YouTube if you search Blas Ceoil by title. Here’s a link to Dick’s previous offering, which I have posted before, to give a taster...
Horo Gheallaidh takes a similar approach on BBC Alba, though they are even more eclectic, and I’m not convinced that their ‘trendy bar’ isn’t actually a stage set. Again, a search of YouTube will yield results the following is one of my favourites...
This programme is also in season at present – the latest show included Norrie McIver, The Shee (looking terribly self-satisfied) and an interesting one-string Gambian ‘fiddle’ (apparently called the riti or nyanyeru ) player – Juldeh Camara at 18 mins (only available for the next 13 hours...)
Ian, I had heard a rumour that we might be able to pick up ALBA on the Digi Box at some stage .... any word on that?
I believe you can get ABLA if you have Sky, but quite frankly I get enough CR@P for my TV Licence money, without paying £300 or £400s more every year, for dozens of extra channels of pure CR@P! ......... & a Zillion more feckin adverts to drive me nuts!
By the way, as you may have noticed from the way we were all sitting cozily cheek by jowl the other night, the House of McDonnell is very definitely a real place & a very cozy wee Pub too ....... none of yer fancy manufactured stage sets for us!
Jeez, but that certainly is a scary thought, to think that in the future, the only places around, where folks could play there music out, might be manufactured Olde Worlde / Trandy plastic Irish Pubs! .............. Aaaaarrrggg
Oh & thanks for that Alba link, Ian. .... straight onto my favourites! Although, I think your right, it looks like they're playing in the middle of some trendy, up-market Wine Bar!
Great show Dick. It is amazing how, with the trick of tv they can make Tom's seem like a bigger place than it really is.
As far as BBC Alba is concerned, other than through Sky and cable services you can also get it on Freesat (a free satellite version of Freeview with a wider range of channels). You can also, as can be seen above, get a limited range of the programmes on iPlayer. I have freeview at present so iPlayer is the only way I can watch it. There is a campaign to get it on Freeview but it doesn't look like it will happen particularly soon. Ultimately it is a question of finance and Freeview only has a limited number of channels available (although I would happily delete half of them and I don't think they would be missed.)
I am not sure where they film the Horo Gheallaidh programme. It will be filmed during Celtic Connections when everyone is in town. There have been some great acts on the show.
Aye, .... but even with all their hi tech stuff, they still couldn't hide the fact that I'm starting to get just a little bit thin on top!
I got a wee Digi Box in Tescos a while back, which cost me £20 & I do get a few extra Movie views out of it, plus History is great ...... & Dave too, if it weren't for the oh so many repeats.
Must check out that Freeview thingy they keep advertising, just to see what I'd get for my money.
At the end of the day, I probably watch Channel YouTube more than most of them!
No satellite dish with Freeview, just a digibox. Freesat involves a satellite dish. Neither has a subscription fee. We have had the digital switchover in Perth now so there are no analogue stations at all. By the looks of it you will get it in 2012.
You should get even more digital stations after then. By the sounds of it you have bought all you need to. You will just have to retune it a couple of times when the switchover happens.
>>I am not sure where they film the Horo Gheallaidh
The commentary on the Deaf Shepherd clip says the Tron Theatre, Glasgow, if that means anything to anyone.
Here am I, just 40 miles from London and I can't even get Channel 5 (not that I want it) let alone Free anything, and no digital radio either - no reception. Apparently we sit right on the boundary between two transmitters, so goodness knows what will happen when this area switches over. And I certainly ain't going to put my hard-earned into Maxwell's pocket...
Having said that, many a week goes by without our TV being switched on at all - too busy either marking books or playing tunes! I already get almost all my (minimal) viewing through the computer - when bandwidth permits
Just wish the programmes were easily recordable, though somehow many clips do seem to make it to YouTube before long.
Incidentally Dick, I agree with your comments about using real pubs - but why do they keep 'yellowing out' the windows, and how do they do it? Looks quite atmospheric though, I must admit.
Perhaps what's outside is just too grim to look at?
Well of course, why wouldn't they choose The Tron, after all, it has all that couthy olde Worlde charm you could ever wish for, when hunting for the most natural setting in Scotland, for Traditional Music & Song!

Re: Ptarmigan's on Ptelly...
I'm sure you are right, but from the adds I just got the impression that with Freeview, a satellite dish was involved.

If not, that's great, cause I wasn't that keen to be spending any more money, anyway!
