This could be a long shot but I am a artist (and trad musician) and am looking for photos of session I could use to paint, either to paint the stances or use it for ideas of settings & colors.
I paint a lot of sessions and musicians already but I'm just looking for new settings and ideas as I'm starting to find I'm going round in circles. I think you'll find my email in my details
don't mean to copy shots really, I usually work with a collection of photos for one single painting. But I understand completely if you don't want me to use your shots.
Sign seen, apocryphally, when visitng Mao's China "It is forbidden to make photographs, drawings, or impressions on the mind". If we hobbyists with cameras can draw inspiration from your pictures that influence how we use our cameras can't Ollie us them for "ideas of settings & colors".
Yes, Prof. What I usually look at first in your photos is what he does without. For me it works for the characters who are active but I find the guy almost spilling his beer is a bit off-putting.
thanks folks
There's licensing issues with copying photographs, this is why I don't do it. Likewise, I always ask permission to use a specific photo as a source of inspiration... hence my asking here.
I do a lot of photos myself and I'm lucky to live in Kinvara in Galway where there's no shortage of musicians. I just thought I'd look for something new, people might have photos of their own session, in a different setting, different colors etc ... that they wouldn't mind sharing. no worries
I don't know much about copyright, but I was under the impression that you can paint anything you like -- even a photograph that is someone else's work, or another painting. I'm sure someone will correct me if I have the wrong impression -- it is a long time since I was at art college.
Like those Paintings, and think I know some of those guy's
esp- That guy laying head down on the table clutching a pint of Guinness as if it was his last -- lol.
jim,,
PS -
Is that Danny Diamond a son of an old musical fiddle friend of mine -- Dermi Diamond --- sorry about name's dropping - just curious ???
Olivier - I just sent you an e-mail via your web-site. There's a spot on my wall that was made for one of your prints. Irish Music and Surfing. Simply wonderful.
thanks. folks.
and thanks to everyone who's sent me a few pictures and ideas.
It's not about copying photos but more about finding sources of inspiration and new ideas
Interesting - the faceless musicians, the music is the most important thing etc. - had to laugh, almost the complete antithesis of the shots of Prof.Pyyrtrtrttr or whatever it is. I can't really see how you could possibly attribute these images to any photograph. I suppose an analogy is a writer quoting sources - we read & hear other peoples views all the time - we digest them and then write our own interpretation of them. It's nice to attribute but it's not legally necessary - we're free to absorb and reinterpret.

Re: Session photos
I guess you really need to find a situation where you can get peoples' permission to reproduce their image for commercial purposes before you use it.
Otherwise people might think you're stealing part of their soul...

Also I assumed, perhaps naively, that anyone working commercially would know about permissions etc.

I too like Ollie's paintings.
My photographs are not relevant to his work.

Re: Session photos
there is some connection here:
seeing sessions live, looking at pics, and then processing the images
and hearing music live, hearing it in various formats, and then making the tunes your own to play.
can't quite articulate it, and certainly don't mean to open any cans of worms: musical, visual, or otherwise.
i liked the images, especially the colors. and the forms and compositions were intriguing. thanks for the chance to see them.

Re: Session photos
I always knew that this music was played by overweight balding men, but this really brings that point home
(Actually, I really like the paintings. Do you have a place where they are for sale?)

On his website, Pete, which you can link to from his profile.
There is a really nice wee one of a fiddler and piper.
I just want to say that I don't look much like that piper. ;)
