Adding sheetmusic to a submitted tune.

Adding sheetmusic to a submitted tune.

Quite simply how do I add the sheetmusicto the submitted tune? I couldn't see an option for doing so.

Re: Adding sheetmusic to a submitted tune.

You submite the tune in ABC, the sheet music (the gif) is auto-generated from the ABC. Ain't technology wonderful?

Re: Adding sheetmusic to a submitted tune.

You submit the abcs & your comments. The sheet music is generated later, by the webmaster. If you want to see what it might look like there are abc coverters on other sites;

Re: Adding sheetmusic to a submitted tune.

When does this happen? Does someone have to initiate the process by pressing a button perhaps?

Re: Adding sheetmusic to a submitted tune.

Jeremy reviews the abcs before generating the .gif. It all depends on his schedule. More or less 2-5 days, sometimes sooner.

Re: Adding sheetmusic to a submitted tune.

No, I believe it's automatic. At least, I can't imagine why anyone would want it to run manually*. I think it's probably a batch job that runs periodically, which is why it takes a little while for the sheet music to show up.

Or maybe Ben's right. In any case, that was a cross-post, responding to keitypete, not rudely contradicting Ben.

Re: Adding sheetmusic to a submitted tune.

From time to time I have brought up the subject. Here is one response I received;
"When I then go to create the sheetmusic, I check that the ABC notation is valid. If it's not, I see what I can do to fix it. Usually the issues are pretty obvious (a missing note length or pause). If the ABCs are invalid and I can't fix them, then I delete the tune and ask the person who submitted it to test their tunes in some ABC software before submitting them.

So it's not like I'm just blindly converting whatever is submitted into sheetmusic; there's quite a bit of editorial control already."

Re: Adding sheetmusic to a submitted tune.

Crazy. Maybe I should run up a little ABC validator for him. That would be fun. Or more llikely, he's already running some validation, and he's just doing the repair.

In any case, it would make sense to generate a GIF on submit, and then ask people to flag questionable submissions for review. Not that it makes a lot of difference, there hasn't been much new material worth looking at in the last few years, and I don't anticipate a whole lot more coming in. There may be more traditional tunes that aren't in here, but if there are, it seems that the people playing them aren't posting them here.

Re: Adding sheetmusic to a submitted tune.

The sheetmusic is usually generated a couple of days after the tune submission. This also gives you some buffer time to make any corrections to the ABCs before the sheetmusic appears.

Thanks Jeremy. I'll be more patient in future.

Re: Adding sheetmusic to a submitted tune.

As was said, the sheet music is generated at one point in time, two or three days after submission. Anyone can then add whatever comments they wish and wonderful suggestions for variations and alternative settings are then proposed in the Comments section, usually with ABCs. I think the OP can still make changes to the original ABC that is attached to the name of the tune. But the sheet music is never again updated after that original setting put in two or three days after the original post. It might be nice to have a way to update the sheet music.

Re: Adding sheetmusic to a submitted tune.

Jeremy can update it by hand if you find an error once it's been converted. You have to email him and it may take him a couple weeks to get around to it.

Re: Adding sheetmusic to a submitted tune.

It's too bad actual sheet music can't be submitted. I transcribe everything on my computer in notation software and save as PDF files. I don't know a damn thing about ABC, but I figure out most of the tunes from the latest flute albums note for note. I'd share them if I could.

Re: Adding sheetmusic to a submitted tune.

You could easily enough drewr, host your PDF files on a cloud server then link to them through the comments section and your profile. you could also convert the PDF to JPG and host them on flickr or the like. Not perfect but workable.

Im sure there would be plenty of interest and any of us able could transcribe into ABC Its an excellent format, very handy. I was sceptical at first but Im a convert. I even compose in ABC now, then convert to the dots then to PDF then jpg which I could carry in my phone for eg

well worth playing about with the format.
