Re: Question on MacArthur Road

MacArthur Road sounds better in A major. Always seems to to me anyway.

But if I play it in E major I play the high B with my 2nd finger and the C# with the third finger. Basically moving into 3rd position.

Re: Question on MacArthur Road

Jim, yep, shift into 3rd position, B with middle finger, C# with ring finger to play it in E (the key Dave Richardson originally wrote it in).

In that second half of the tune, I play the first high B with my pinky, then shift for the bec'e be e/e/e bit, shifting back down during all those open E string notes.

Re: Question on MacArthur Road

Great stuff guy's, I'll maybe get somewhere with this tune now -
having to use the wee finger like that put's me off playing it,,
Esp, on my own as sometimes you miss hit the C# with the little finger, the way I do it here,,,,

Many Thank's Again --

Re: Question on MacArthur Road

From a mandolin player's perspective, I can't see that it makes much difference which finger(s) you use, since you're playing the open E-string in between. Perhaps, when playing it on the fiddle, the choice of fingering might affect intonation.

I can't guarantee that I tackle this tune the same way every time. For someone who plays mostly traditional music, the high C-sharps are slightly unfamiliar territory, so I tend to take the 'seat-of-pants' approach and do whatever I have to do to reach them. But I tend to do it like this: I play the first B, at the beginning of the 2nd part, with my little finger, as I would in any other tune. Then, whilst playing the open E-string, I shift my hand up to play the susequent Bs with my 4th (ring) finger, the C-sharp with my little finger and G-sharp with my 1st (index) finger. I then shift back to 1st position use my 1st finger on the F-sharp.

If I tried to play this tune on fiddle, my intonation would go completely haywire.

Yes < C-sharps are slightly unfamiliar territory,> and your
< 'seat-of-pants' approach > lol... Is about all I do with this tune so far -- But, '' Change's will be made '' -- : )

Re: Question on MacArthur Road

Hey Jim,

I'm the same as Will - shift into 3rd with my middle finger on the B and ring finger on the C#. I just can't stretch my pinky out that far to stay in 1st!

Re: Question on MacArthur Road

I play it in second position or in third, depending on what I'm playing before or after it.

If I'm running up to the b, I might play f-sharp, g-sharp, shift to third for first finger on a, then second finger b and third finger c-sharp.

If I'm just diving into that part after a chord or whatever I might play the high b with the fourth finger, then shift to second to play the c sharp with the fourth too, playing the b with the third afterwards.

Great tune.
