A friend just e-mailed me this link to a clever site for finding tunes: http://folktunefinder.com/
If you're searching for the name of a Gan Ainm tune you already play, or if you only rememeber a few bars of a tune you'd like to learn, this site might be worth a try.
You click notes on the piano keys to as much of the tune as you remember (there's a 15-note limit), and the database quickly finds several suggestions to tunes that might be the one you're searching for. I played around with it a few minutes trying to find the name of a Gan Ainm tune I play. Although I haven't found the right one yet, the database offered some surprisingly close suggestions.
I love that site, I use it all the time. It has several different versions of all the tunes. And the first tune that pops up is always usually the most commonly played version.
If you want to get more in depth in your searching, there are a couple of other alternatives, too. Including my ABC search site, which requires you to have it written out in (more or less) decent ABC (it doesn't care much about bar lines, or whatever, as long as you've got your upper/lower case correct for the octaves).
And even more impressive, of course, is Bryan Duggan's TunePal site (and associated mobile applications), which allow you to play a tune in, and it will analyze it, search for it, and tell you what it is. I use the iPhone app pretty regularly at sessions to find the names of tunes being played...
