Re: trad music in sydney

I think there was something every second Sunday at "Dirty Nellie's", Elaine Jeffries was involved so it would be worth going to.

Have you tried "The Harp" in Tempe?

Re: trad music in sydney

Haven't heard of the Cock and Bull, but the Gaelic Club 8pm every Thursday is good. There is one at Hornsby every 2nd and 4th Tuesday, another at Dirty Nellie's in Paddington on Sunday afternoons every other week. Another at Kelly's in Newtown every Sunday night.

I'm surprised about the Harp at Tempe. I've never been there but it had a good reputation. Still, all things change.

Re: trad music in sydney

I've heard the Kangaroo Valley festival is more focussed on Aust bush music than irish trad, but you'd probably know some of the tunes played.

There's a slow session in Marrickville too, which is probably listed in the session links on this site.

Re: trad music in sydney

It's a few months since I left Sydney, but earlier this year there was no doubt that the Gaelic Club on Thursdays was streets ahead of the rest *for my taste*. Great tunes, really good players who are also great people, not too much FAst Reel ThrashING. (Yes, thrashed reels can be fun, but not when they are the staple of the session. For my taste, as I said.)

It's years since I went to Durty Nellie's, but at that time it was dominated by Steam Reelers, and the punters were noisy and mostly drunk. Some people might like that, of course, no problem, but it didn't exactly draw me in. It was also very cliquey at that time. Things change though, so you should probably try it.

It depends on your skill level, of course. Hornsby gets a lot of players, and is very friendly to those with less experience.

Re: trad music in sydney

There's two regular sessions down the Hume Highway at King O'Malley's pub in Canberra. Sundays at 5pm and Tuesdays at 8-ish. Sunday is fast. Tuesday a bit slower. Musos from Derry can be found there from time to time.

Re: trad music in sydney

We have a nice little ITM sesh at the Clarendon (front bar) in Katoomba - Sunday arvo from 2pm. Good players - not too thrashy.
