An interesting session with jet helicopters and glow sticks

An interesting session with jet helicopters and glow sticks

On Saturday night, a bunch of us from The Ould Sod had a session in the San Diego Coast Guard search and rescue helicopter hanger for an officer's retirement party. It was a unique setting for a session and a lovely evening was had by all:

About halfway through the evening a klaxon went off and we had the opportunity to see them launch one of the helicopters, which are Blackhawk variants for the Coast Guard with dual 2000 HP jet engines. Pretty amazing being up close to one of those when it powers up.

Cheers,

Michael

Fabulous photos! How were the acoustics?

What was on the set list? Sailor on the Rock? Ships are Sailing? The Navvy on the Line?

Re: An interesting session with jet helicopters and glow sticks

The acoustics were surprisingly good considering the size of the structure. the sides were concrete block so there was a little bit of reverb from the walls and ceiling. We setup next to the helicopter in the hanger to give us something like a band shell with the curves of the fuselage.

Who was the retiree? There is a good chance I will know him, as I served in the USCG. A pretty setting, that USCG facility in San Diego!

Adam Morton was the gentleman.

A very pleasant evening, it must be said.

And yes, Al, that's the Martin 000-18 (at about 2:30) that I loaned you when you visited The Field back when.

Jumper, I thought you and that guitar looked familiar! I have fond memories of that evening, and your kindness in allowing me to share in the session!!! Thanks!

Re: An interesting session with jet helicopters and glow sticks

It's interesting that in your session you've got 3 flutes, a piper,
a concertina and only only 1 fiddle. My local session is often
all fiddles - maybe it's unusual? But another one in town often
has no fiddles or just one.

At recent festival nearby - which I missed - the sessions had
heaps of banjos, boxes, flutes and whistles and very few
fiddles. I wonder if this is some kind of trend - people put fiddle
in the 'too hard' basket. I am always on the verge of doing
that myself.

Re: An interesting session with jet helicopters and glow sticks

There are often four or five fiddles at the two sessions here that I attend. It was just happenstance that evening that I ended up being the only fiddler, as the others had commitments elsewhere.

Re: An interesting session with jet helicopters and glow sticks

Actually there were two fiddlers there that night. We both also played other instruments too, so maybe the other wasn't caught in the photos with a fiddle in hand..

Interesting photos, thanks for sharing them.

Re: An interesting session with jet helicopters and glow sticks

I was wondering about the flag too - but having been to school in the US I know it's a big thing over there. And that's a big one!!

You don't know man, you weren't there!

Don't tell me about the bloomin' Amerikans and there blessed flag! About ten years ago when I was in the Land of the Free doing a gig, I made a joke about that flag (which was stuck up on the stage!) and bonfires. Some bloke who looked like a biker but told me he was a 'Vet' explained to me very 'strongly' not to diss the silly piece of cloth! Turns out he wasn't a James Herriot clone but some geezer who had fought the good fight in VietNam ('You don't know man, you weren't there'- Jeremy Clarkson 2009) and thereby saving the world including me. That doo dah is a very important thing to them!

Re: An interesting session with jet helicopters and glow sticks

At school we used to pledge allegiance to it - and it was the first thing out, during fire drills. It's quite sweet - in a sort of Roman Empire way...

Re: An interesting session with jet helicopters and glow sticks

Please don't turn a thread about some photos of a lovely night of music and friends into a debate about the American flag...

Re: An interesting session with jet helicopters and glow sticks

Michael Eskin -

Thank you. I was going to say the same thing. It's a U.S. military retirement ceremony, it's a bit of a given that there will be the U.S. flag represented. I'm prior U.S. Navy myself, so I understand the drill. But we don't all treat the flag as a holy relic.

Re: An interesting session with jet helicopters and glow sticks

The event was a 20 year retirement ceremony for a chief in the Coast Guard search and rescue.service.

Re: An interesting session with jet helicopters and glow sticks

Well, more of a retirement party than a ceremony...

Re: An interesting session with jet helicopters and glow sticks

I would have thought that some of those pics could be considered
'classified', Michael. Has Homeland Security been to see you this week?

Re: An interesting session with jet helicopters and glow sticks

We made sure that we had clearance to take photos and video at the event. There were probably 50 cameras there between all the guests.

Considering this huge hanger and helicopters are right there on Harbor Drive in the heart of the city, it's no national security secret that the Coast Guard has rescue helicopters in San Diego. :-)

Re: An interesting session with jet helicopters and glow sticks

Great photos, Michael. You are in some of the photos - was this your little Canon that you passed around, or a compendium of shots from 50 cameras, or...?

Interesting, indeed.

Was that what the video was done on too? Liked that - a good sense of fun and occasion.

Re: An interesting session with jet helicopters and glow sticks

The video that Jumper (John) posted was from an iPod Nano.

Re: An interesting session with jet helicopters and glow sticks

Thanks - can't really tell sometimes, once YouTube does it's stuff to a video. I posted one about four years ago and I swear the sound's gone all wobbly.
