Concertina wanted!

Concertina wanted!

Looking for a very good concertina ( suttner, jeffries crabb etc.).
Cannot wait 4 years for a suttner so want to buy 2nd hand!
I have come across one for sale for 6500? Is that a rip off?

Does anyone know of anybody selling a very good one?

Re: Concertina wanted!

6500 euro, 6500 sterling, or $6500 U.S.?

$6500.00 U.S. is not a rip-off provided the instrument is new, nearly new, or in as-new/mint condition. otherwise, pass. i'm shakier on euro and sterling values....

Re: Concertina wanted!

$6500 isn't a ripoff if it's worth $600-1000 to get one four years early, and if it's in good condition. Suttner has his 2008 price-list online: http://www.suttnerconcertinas.com/prices.html

Last I checked, Suttners are pretty much right up there in quality with Jeffries, and I recently saw what I think was a 30-button Jeffries selling for around $10,000 in a single day (http://www.thesession.org/discussions/display/25000)

Re: Concertina wanted!

Georgi, of course $10,000 is around £6444 just now, so if ff is looking for the very best, then unless he's very, very lucky, I reckon he should prepare to be spending that kind of money, for something like a top quality vintage Jeffries anyway.

At my time of life, I don't even buy green Bananas, so I certainly wouldn't be waiting for 4 years!

Cheers

Re: Concertina wanted!

I spotted a Jeffries FOUR-ROW Anglo on ebay last night, but the four rows are all in FLAT keys - seemed to be in your price range, but I don't think you could take it to a session.
How many 4-row Jeffries can there be about ? Must be a pretty rare bird to start with.

Re: Concertina wanted!

It's 6500 euro.

The question at the moment is,
Caroll or suttner?

Re: Concertina wanted!

i'd call that one subjective. i'm personally very partial to the tone of recent-model suttners. i hear a deep, thick texture to it that i really like. but carrolls are really good instruments which also have a lovely tone. both of their action/responsiveness is considered high-quality, so if there turns out to be a difference there that would go or not go with you individually, you can only know by playing them......

Re: Concertina wanted!

Let's face it, you'd have to be absolutely crazy, to spend that kind of money on either, without trying them both out, first!

Pete, have you got a link for that Jeffries, I don't see it?

4 rows makes it sound more like a Duet, doesn't it?

Cheers
Dick

Re: Concertina wanted!

The Buttonbox has a C/G Jeffries at $10,800. I am on a waiting list for a Suttner, but have started looking for other concertinas in the meantime. Seems like C/G Suttners, Carrolls and Wakkers are more or less never advertised on the usual channels:-(

Re: Concertina wanted!

The Jeffries is in the US - go to worldwide searches.
Or maybe you're too late.
But they did list the notes played, it was an anglo, Eb, Ab, F, and Bb, I think.
Must have been a special for someone. Maybe they worked in jazz, or with a brass player.

Re: Concertina wanted!

Thanks everyone.

Don't worry I will certainly be trying the concertina before buying! Would love a Jeffries as advertised on button box, is it worth an extra thousand or so than a nice done up suttner?

Re: Concertina wanted!

We've had this question before, about many different instruments; what is this Greengage 1936 all-maple mandola worth etc. ?
The answer is, what someone is prepared to pay for it.
Does it ring your chimes ? That's really the only question worth asking.
If you want to know if it will keep its resale value, which sometimes seems to be the underlying question, you are, in my humble opinion, a knobhead. Perhaps comparable to those people who buy and sell 300-year-old violins and keep them in bank vaults.
An instrument has value because it has qualities of tone and handling that bring joy to its musician and its audience. Anything extra is pure snobbery.
IMNSHO.

Re: Concertina wanted!

Didn't mean to kill the conversation......
......incidentally, it's good to know in these straitened times that some people have quantities of disposable income.
Meanwhile, had to fork out £200 + to get the drains cleared. Ouch ! That wasn't in the months' budget.

Re: Concertina wanted!

the rochelles are very good value for money, and are reasonably OK to play in sesh while you wait.
I think that if someone made a similar cheapish box in G/D, as well as beginners, all the decent players might buy one as a second box to play in seshes where a Jeffries might "walk".
I would consider it just to play chords in English seshes.
