'The music of Joe's life could be described as the Leitrim Cake: in it the sweet/salty taste of home, timeless, universal, crusted on the hearth of varnished fires; cure for deep hunger; a taste that lingers, the best of youth and the consolation of age.'

Joe 'Lacky' Gallagher's CD 'The Leitrim Cake', recorded in 1948 by Seamus Ennis and digitally remastered by Harry Bradshaw 2010 and produced by the John McKenna Traditional Society is available for purchase from http://www.johnmckenna.ie/
I've never heard of Joe Lacky Gallagher but I want to hear more, admittedly not a huge fan of fiddle music but this playing is a joy to listen to. Found another track on Youtube:
it's interesting how close to Tommy Potts' version he is in that recording of Master Crowley. He must have learned that straight from Potts (nothing remotely similar in approach occurs in any of the other tunes). In that context the date of 1948 is interesting as it would indirectly show Potts' own style was well formed already by the mid forties (As to some extent you would expect, Potts being born in 1912. But his digressions from the traditional form is often dated back to a traumatic occurrence that occurred around 1946)
Yes John McKenna and this fiddle player are both from Drumkeerin in county Leitrim. Quite a few musicians from that area I think. I love North Connaught Music - re Tommy Potts - I think the styles are quite similiar and would say from what I can hear, it is not the typical Leitrim style of play. Though Leitrim is known for the flute more so, either way love this playing and can't wait to get my CD
Hadn't heard of him either - even though I'm from that part of the country - but by God that's the stuff all right ... fantastic playing and a joy to listen to. Well done the the John McKenna Traditional Society for making the album available.
