1922 Gibson Mandolin, Model A, Excellent Condition, For Sale

1922 Gibson Mandolin, Model A, Excellent Condition, For Sale

This instrument was lovingly owned and cared for by our father for most of it's 88 years. Our father was a "honky toke" musician and played piano, accordion, and mandolin. My brother remembers him playing it in the late 1940's but we do not know how our father originally came to own it.

This instrument has not been played since before 1992 however even now it is very close to being in tune! My brother, also a musician, says that, "It really rings." The finish is nearly perfect except for some "buckle scratches" on the lower back that have damaged the finish but do not go through the stain or into the wood itself.

All reasonable offers will be considered.

Here's an unsolicited blurb, with a disclaimer: I don't know Trishah, and I've never seen or played this particular instrument, so I can't vouch for her or for the instrument. Apply all due caution to entering into transactions on the world-wide-whatsit. That said:

This looks very much like my mandolin, which dates from around the same time, perhaps a few years older). I haven't played this one, but mine is a lovely instrument for tunes, with a rounder, more woody tone than you get from an F model (the Fs tend to have more "bite"). They're not a tremendously loud model, so perhaps not ideal for a huge session, but they can certainly be heard in reasonable company. (I've led tunes in sessions of 8-10 people, including a box and pretty loud fiddler)

I've been playing mine for maybe ten years, and I've never once regretted buying it. Again, I haven't played the instrument offered here, but it's certainly worth evaluating this one if you're in the market.

This instrument has also been advertised on eBay and the Mandolin Cafe Classifieds.

Judging from the telephone number on her website I'd say she's in Central New Jersey, USA.

You can get a lot more specific than that, ejsant - thanks for not doing that, though.
Trishah - did you know that listing your phone number gives any interested party your full name and street address? Thank heavens for google, huh? If that doesn't appeal to you, you should strip the phone number from your site and replace it with some disposable email address (ie, a one-off gmail address).

I agree with Jon's advice. That's why I use a P.O. Box and only advertise my mobile number. Although anymore I suppose someone could track me down by that as well.

Trishah,

You might wish to stop by St. Stephen's Green right in your town on session night and speak to the musicians there. Also Brookdale has an Irish studies department I believe. What's a reasonable offer in your mind?

All the best!

Peace,
Ed
