I think this is such a great example of two generations of fiddlers. Each of them plays a little bit differently from the other but together they make a gorgeous sound.
No shame, Jim. It's really a challenge to keep up with all the music that's available now, isn't it? Youtube is amazing for the way it connects us to a lot of the music from the past.
MacCruiskeen, even if you are a grumpy oul bollix you have top taste in music James Byrne besides being a grand ,honest fiddler was a grand, honest, friendly ,welcoming , decent man. Keep them coming!
I would say I have answered that but I am surprised why anything I have done would warrant the same question 3 times . maybe you are a schoolteacher or a garda that is used to getting the answer you want.
No, you haven't answered my question, big_tab, and seem to be avoiding it via aspersions.
For the record, over the years I met James Byrne on numerous occasions, including: 1) in Johnny Joe's in Kilcar; 2) in Roarty's in Glemcolmcille; 3) in The Highlands Hotel in Glenties; 4) in The Camden Irish Centre; and 5) in his own kitchen in Meeanacross.
That's not boasting, just fact. I agree with your sentiments about the man, but you've steadfastly refused to admit where you met him!
Actually MacCruiskeen, I am a little annoyed. All I did was say nice things about a very nice man and an interesting fiddler James Byrne . You have made it into some schoolyard competition.

More of him below, fresh and recent too from the Catskills Irish Arts Week. Looks like a familiar name to the mustard board took this video, thanks Gary!
Cronin's insights on O'Keefe are fantastic in Jim's last link there. starts around the 2:15 mark.
"For anyone who played the same thing over and again he [O'Keefe] 'was like a separator', he said. [laughs] He taught us to change it around, of course, and he was right."
Mike Rafferty and Paddy Cronin besides being such a pleasure to listen to, as they both have a way of playing the tune and making it sound as if we could all play that way,are possibly the very last of their generation of players.Interesting that Paddy Cronin seems to enjoy playing reels and jigs more than polkas and slides. It also seems to me,and I wonder what swfl fiddler thinks of this, that he has completely changed his style over the sixty years we have access to his recordings.
