padded case to put around an old wooden flute case?

padded case to put around an old wooden flute case?

I'm trying to find a protective case to put around the wooden case that holds my flute. The covers for modern flute cases don't fit. Without breaking the bank, can anyone suggest alternatives. Dimensions are about 34cm x 13cm x 5cm. Any ideas?

Can you sew enough to make something? If you use duck cloth, which is a heavy fabric but not as coarse as canvas, you can quilt it to make a cloth padded case. Then sew on a zipper or some buttons and attach a strap

I made a couple bodhran bags, a low whistle case, and even a leather case for my mandolin (my cousin shot the deer and gave me the hide)

of course, I'm out in the country and we make stuff if it saves us a trip to town, so you might be too civilized to go and shoot your own flute case. But if you do make your own, try and shoot a varmint that's a bit longer than your flute, it will give you more room for error when you go to sew it up

That's why there are no snakes in Ireland!

I think Nate is right, something hand made would probably just be better all around. Some sporting goods (camping and hunting supply) shops sometimes carry various sacks/bags that are meant for people to put what ever items they might want in, but those extreme dimensions might be tough to find in a ready made product and it would cost too much most likely. What about a simple velvet(y) draw string bag? I'd make you one, but I guess you probably live too far away to make that practical ;-).

Wait a minute are you in China? Is there a sewing shop anywhere even reasonably nearby? Could some one give you directions to one? I am sure you could get a very nice bag made for very inexpensive and have a wonderful memory and souvenier!

Cut-down shoe box? Hollowed out plastic foam? Padded envelope? Do you want permanent or temporary, tasteful or serviceable?

Yeah Gam, how about a big thick wool sock washed in warm water, then have it dry over the box you could felt it to just the right size! A flute cozy! Now that's cheap. Not sure it would protect it from much accept maybe catching a flu.

A padded envelope addressed something like this might be a useful anti-theft measure:

<your local hospital>
Department of Gastroenterology
attention: Parasitology Technician
URGENT - KEEP REFRIGERATED - STOOL SAMPLES
Protective Clothing Must Be Worn When Opening

Re: padded case to put around an old wooden flute case?

I would much rather make something from scratch than buy it, so when I got my new delrin keyless flute, I decided to make a case. I went to the local fabric shop and bought one yard of dark green quilted material. I folded it lenghwise, sewed the edges, then sewed pockets for all the sections of the flute. When the flute is dissasembled and put into the pockets, the whole thing is rolled up and tied with a sneaker lace. Total cost? under a dollar.

Sandybottoms - China, yes that's a good idea. I'm out there for a couple of weeks and will have the flute with me. On past experience I should be able to get a good outer case stitched there (on practically any main street)

Re: padded case to put around an old wooden flute case?

If a fumble fingers like me can sew together long felt bags for storing his whistles and fifes, I am sure you can come up with something. I used cotton felt squares from a craft store folded double thick, folded at the bottom to have a nice thick seam to protect the ends, and folded over at the top. Something like that on a larger scale would work great around your wooden case.

This will fit your flute case, I have one and just checked your measurements:

I just use it for tin whistles, but it's made for a flute box.
