Woke up this morning after sessioning last night and realised the offensive odour in the room wasn't me - it was rising off the clothes I wore to the pub last night. Ugh. Worse than stale ciggy smoke.
The session wasn't bad but I won't be going back to that pub. Maybe have to start taking a change of clothes when I go out....
Re: the sort of pub a 'good session might be found in
Try taking your clothes off before you get into bed. I take it you were in bed when you woke up?
But seriously -- as an ex-publican I find this interesting. Didn't you notice a bad smell when you walked it? What sort of smell is it -- stale perfume? BO? Yeasty? Beery? Foody? Did the seat feel - um - damp? The landlord would like to know, or if he wouldn't, he certainly should.
Re: the sort of pub a 'good session might be found in
We'll need a few details to sort this out, sir. Please reply to Detective gam's questions regarding the nature of the smell, that will help us identify the perpetrators.
Re: the sort of pub a 'good session might be found in
yhaalhouse makes a valid point. In fact I often take it a step further and have fully coordinated waredrobe changes at various points during the session. Cher's show in Vegas has nothing on me. The feather boa and headpiece I wore last week when we wrapped up the night with The Bucks was simply stunning, if I do say so myself. .
Re: the sort of pub a 'good session might be found in
Do what our country did some years back and ban smoking indoors. It didn't stop people going to the pubs, and some actually started going after that, because it was MUCH NICER.
Re: the sort of pub a 'good session might be found in
A typical back street pub, not exactly the most salubrious of venues (air conditioning? nicholas, you have got to be kidding - the ciggy smoke drifting in through the open front door might just pass as that) but I did think the seating itself was probably past it's sell by date and this I suspect was the origin of the offending odour - no, I didn't go to sleep in my clothes; drinking and driving you know, not sensible. I did have a rather nice curry before attending the session and I think this may have had a prophylactic effect on my senses.
gam, as you will know constant attention to detail is essential; the covering on the stool I was sitting on was somewhat shiney....if I needed to tell the management would it have made any difference?.
On the other hand...
There was a welcome and sandwiches and savouries were laid on, the punters were appreciative if somewhat loud - it's their night out as well as ours; there were some proper beers available and players of all abilities (including meself) were made welcome by the regulars.
In my somewhat limited experience, some of the better sessions usually occur in the sort of pub you might not at first think of patronising. Anybody got any thoughts on that?
JNE, your idea of multiple changes, I think, certainly has some merit; question - will I need to carry a suitcase as well as a fiddle case? Should I have a portable screen to change behind? How long can I spend on a costume change?
Re: the sort of pub a 'good session might be found in
The biggest issue with repeated wardrobe changes John, is that some folks accuse you of trying to turn the session into a "performance" - and we all know what a can of worms that can be...
Re: the sort of pub a 'good session might be found in
as a Barman for what seems like a diproportional period of time now I can confidently assume that the premises in question needs a deep clean. no excuses. most Bars are filthy and the staff are paid too little to care. Like Gam said, mention it to the gaffer and it will be taken on board and sorted. Unless hes a lazy as the staff. Im such a Bar geek, someone shoot me
Re: the sort of pub a 'good session might be found in
JNE, yes indeedy, I was thinking more along the lines of keeping copies of 'dots' stuck to the back of the screen as an aide memoir - at least I wouldn't have a book in front of me while playing. Tee hee.
I quite agree Miss Mulligan and certainly true in this case. I'm not naming names as I haven't spoken to the management there. What I think is my own business and constructive criticism ( I hope) should be done face to face.
There is certainly an issue with pubs closing and finding places to session in but I don't think financial constraints, profitability etc. are a problem in this case. On the night I was there they couldn't get the beer out of the pumps or change barrels fast enough.
Re: the sort of pub a 'good session might be found in
Sounds fab - but maybe take something to sit on if you're worried! I remember reading a story about the various types of gunk they recovered from London Underground train seats, some of it downright scary. Ewww!
Re: the sort of pub a 'good session might be found in
John, I've been here a few times, and recently. The recent was deciding, with the help of my wife, that I'd had enough of the rebel pub where a couple of sessions I'd been attending take place regularly. The dear character that owns the place is a chain smoker. Recently I came back reeking of smoke and my wife made me strip and throw it all in the wash before she'd let me in. If only I could do the same with my lungs, which were raw with it. My head took over my heart and I attended one more session, and I won't be going back to that pub again.
In the past there was another one where there were actually things growing on the upholstery, mold, and it was like the place was rarely being cleaned. And some of the regulars stank pretty badly too, especially one old codger that was always glued to one gambling machine in a corner of the place. It really needed to be condemned. Once or twice was too much and I quickly wrote that one off too. The air stank with the mold and mildew and other sour scents...

That sometimes happens when you drink too much. I suggest you find a meeting...

Changing your trousers: an important part of playing this music at sessions as I have so often mentioned in the past...

Could it possibly be caused by the bullsh*t of the local session police perchance?

Or maybe all the p*ssing and moaning of the noobs, Johnny come latelys, and egomaniacs who think trad needs to be "fixed?"

It must have been you, or noxious vapour swirling off your food or someone else's.
Perhaps something horrible from the kitchen / refuse bin lobby had got into the air conditioning, and was spraying the environs like a skunk.

That's a matter of opinion. The smoke was great for keeping out the obnoxious twits who used to only go to the non-smoking bars.
