You might consider looking at a detailed map of Ireland (you can Google "Map of Ireland" to find a good one) and choose a name of a city or village. I think names like Ballycastle, Roundstone, or Castletown Bere make neat-sounding names for bands. You could also come up with a phrase or description that is meaningful to your band (like "good friends making music" and translate it to Gaelic for a neat-sounding and meaningful name.
The Band With No Name
Namely The Band
The Nameless Ones
The Nameless Unknowns (I would suggest the Famous Unknowns but that has already been taken by a local blues-rock band)
The Band Of The Nameless One
john.Translation for "How are your bowels" "Conas atá do phutógaí".Possibly not the name of a band that rolls off the tongue but actually sounds ok when spoken.
Can you give us a phonetic rendering of that tab? There are a couple of gaelic speakers at my session and this would make a pleasant alternative greeting.
IMHO a name in Irish is pretty crass unless you have at least the basics of the language.
Apart from anything else you're going to look a bit daft when someone speaks to you in Irish at a gig and you have to say you don't have the language. (And you won't know if they don't speak it either and are making it up!)
Maybe Tom but sometimes the words are just words and can be nice sounding. You might not know that the band name Clannad comes from the Irish word "clann" which means family. All that band were family and the name worked great internationally.Of course,as you point out, they were all native speakers of gaelic.
It sounds vaguely exciting. I thought first of Crumbling Shack, but that sounds too twee and Old Timey. Stacks are (amongst other things) isolated rock pinnacles that stick out of the seas round Britain and Ireland. They are known to crumble.
Prophet Octopus.
This is in recognition of Paul the octopus that correctly predicted World Cup results. Born in an English aquarium, he is in a native tradition of eccentric savants. It shouldn't be long before he is elected Chancellor or Rector of some university.
I always thought a good name would be "Those Guys". When a customer asks the barkeep, "Who are those guys?", he'd answer, "Those guys, they're Those Guys". "Yes, but what's their name?" "Those Guys" "Yes, the guys playing music." "Those Guys" "Yes, but what are they called?" "Those Guys". You get the picture.
But seriously, I'd be careful with Irish names. I'm in a band called Cairde na Gael and nobody pronounces it correctly.
