During some routine double-checking of what is available on iTunes, I found that a double album of Michael Coleman's is available now (I don't believe it was there 3 months ago). It will appear as under the surprising title of "Viva Voce" and it contains about a double-albums worth of music. Quality-wise, I'm not sure how it compares with some of the other collections that are now out of print, but it seems a good deal for those who don't have this.
I'm not having any luck sifting through my search results. Anyone have the link for the VV discography page? I remember a while back there was a pretty good discussion about it.
If iTunes is doing the Michael Coleman album that Gael Linn reissued from Viva Voce then it's a welcome change from the usual eBay/Amezon/price gouging racket that's been the norm for a few years.
Yeah, that looks like the same Gael Linn/Viva Voce album that the Amazon trad mongers have been charging a pound of flesh for. But as all .mp3 I feel like I'm paying a dollar a pop for audio that's not even lossless. And just as a sidebar rant while we're on the subject of iTunes, why can't they offer more tracks in .flac? I know, the sound quality of old 78s and all that, but still...
"Before becoming one of Chicago's hottest electric blues guitarists, Michael Coleman began his career playing alongside James Cotton for nearly a decade".
Hahaa. I'm with Llig some of the piano. His Decca recordings with Kathleen Brennan are almost unlistenable. The fact that he could play so well over all that crashing about says volumes about his level of skill and talent.
I recently read of studies where subjects who were given cookies from an almost empty jar thought that they tasted better than cookies from a full jar, which explains a lot about human nature.
I uploaded all the Coleman etc to archive.org; you can also hear his complete opus over at the Comhaltas archives, with only the occasional beep beep to distract you from that stellar key pounding.
FYI: Michael Coleman on iTunes

I thought Viva Voce was an old record label that did a lot of Irish stuff.

Re: FYI: Michael Coleman on iTunes
Llig, what do you not like about it?
does it have a piano player playing wrong chords on it?or are you not a fan of Coleman.

Re: FYI: Michael Coleman on iTunes
It's also on Spotify now too and I'm pretty sure it's
a recent addition there as well.

Re: FYI: Michael Coleman on iTunes
Not just the wrong chords, but dreadful timing too. But it's not too bad on a few tracks. The Classic Tarbolton one for example.

What's up with the Itunes bio?

Re: FYI: Michael Coleman on iTunes
Ha ha - and I always thought the Coleman character was influenced by swing music. Never would have guessed Chicago blues.
