And this one is the fault of Danny McKay, me passing the buck.
We have a couple of names already for such groups ~
CANADA ~ West
Vancouver, British Columbia ~ "Celtic Guerillas"
CANADA ~ East
Montreal, Quebec ~ "Commando Trad"
Are there any more? But more important, what names can you imagine for such a group? This should be easier than contributing band names, as in this case it is a 'mob' rather than a band, an organized mob rather than a few friends who practice and perform regularly. If more cred is desired I guess we could call it an orchestra, or a rally, or ~ ???
How about "a bunch of mad feckers descending on a public place to play a few tunes before melting back into the crowd, leaving behind them a puzzled but pleased crowd of shoppers, one or two of whom will take this as a spur to finally sit down and learn to play some musical instrument like they've always meant to instead of wasting their lives in front of the bloody tube"
Okay, it's a bit long, but maybe the acronym would work...
ABOMFDOAPPTPAFT... okay, maybe not.
Now to go away and see if something can be drummed up in Irish... I can't seem to shake "Militia" from my mind. Maybe it's the half litre of strawberry daiquiri having its effect...
You don't need a name. I don't like either Commando Trad or Celtic Guerillas. Just do it. Sounds like a bunch of would-be invaders sitting around having a cup of tea, trying to come up with a menacing name instead of getting down to the business of looting and pillaging...
No penn, we don't want 'menace' but 'promise', and no looting and pillaging, more like Robin Hood and taking the music back to the people, and the street...
"Live Beat Ninjas"
Would that mean we'd have to dress up in black and leap across the roofs of buildings? The mind is willing but the body is unable...
Naming labeling and packaging will destroy this movement.
The anonymous mystery is what makes this gift of spontaneous tunes so cool.
Naming it would be like when Toto pulled the curtain back on the great and powerful Oz. He wasn't cool anymore.
There is no name that can do something this cool justice.
"Gan Ainm" ~ in spirit, yeah, I like it... It goes along with many secret societies, or the 'name that cannot be named'. I'd also been considering tune names. A name does help to give people some focus, but my general sense of it has that lean that Boatpiper has given words to... In a sense, naming it helps to also pull it out of that secret society namelessness. Yes, it is promotional in a sense, commercial even, and has had great effect and results for promoting music in Vancouver and Montreal, even if they use a military term in the mix. Their adoption of such language is a kind of demilitarization...
YES! It's just too damned bad that those expressing a willingness are so widely dispersed. I can think of little with more potential kick in it than to do something mad like this with folks from this site including the grumblers and nay-sayers... And there would have to be an after party...
This thread is part of the temptation I'm feeling...
OK ceol, Liverpool , Saturday July 18th, in a busy market area. 5pm A nice loopy tune like Lucy Campbell that goes around and around. Anybody in ? Phone, e-mail , text, twitter, everybody welcome. It gives you 3 weeks to practise. Party afterwards. I can't make it myself, of course, but I'll bet you can find a good 20 people to do it...
OK, great names, great enthusiasm, get out and do it!
Yes, ceolachan, dancers are great. All of our local ones seemed to be otherwise engaged, but next time!
And yes, must promise a party/session afterwards, as a few minutes of playing can be a bit of an anti-climax. (We actually played Dingle Regatta for 20 minutes). The session afterwards was well attended.
Also correct, you don't need a name, but if the object is to show the fruits of your labour, some identification may be useful.
