Re: title of march???

Sorry I don't know the tune myself, but I converted the above into the ABC format and tried looking for it in The Reverend's Tune Search Engine (http://abctunesearch.com/).. no luck I'm afraid.

Re: title of march???

Could it be The Penicuik Hornpipe? - http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/6984
Played straight like a reel

Re: title of march???

@Caitail - your full abc transcription of Chipz's tune certainly makes things a little clearer! :-)

However, I don't think that it's the Penicuik Hornpipe. I may be wrong, but it seems to have the feel of an Ulster Scots or a Northumbrian tune.

@ Chipz - I like the tune, but that's maybe because (unlike most people) I like marches.

The problem is, marches at sessions are about as rare as hens' teeth! The only two marches that I've ever heard played at sessions are the Centenary March and Roddy McCorley. For this reason, I think it''s unlikely that you'll get a response to your tune title request in this instance - but good luck anyway!

BTW, I've been looking through my own (fairly extensive) resources for your tune, but so far have drawn a blank.

It might be worthwhile you sending an email to user Ceolachan (he has a good knowledge of obscure tunes).

Q. How did you come across this tune? Knowing your source might possibly aid research. :-)

Re: title of march???

The march submitted is called The Síamsa March. The word Síamsa (Eng: Sheem-Sa) is an Irish word. I think it means Festival but I wouldn't bet on that, and if I'm wrong I'm sure somebody will put me right. .

Re: title of march???

@Free Reed - I know of a tune "Siamsa" - written by Ronan Hardiman for Michael Flatley's "Lord of the Dance"

But I don't think that iit's the same tune as the abc posted by ChipZ above.

Assuming you agree that it is not, what is your source for the tune title that you are referring to?

Re: title of march???

Mix- The word Síamsa covers a multitude of things such as enjoyment, celebrations etc, and this particular tune is The Síamsa March
I learnt the march in 1990. I was helping a few musicians learn some tunes at the time and one of them gave me the music copy (which I still have) of two marches that they wished to learn - The Síamsa and Ireland Abú. When i played the first one I sort of had it in my head already from somewhere. The second one I knew from the sixties, but we use to call it The Ulster Prince. I'm wondering if the tune came from Siamsa Tire, which was formed in Kerry in 1957. (see below) Lastly I played with a folk orchestra on a CD about four years back and one of the march selections we recorded was The Siamsa - Ireland Abú and Down the Glen.
I think the Síamsa March was around well before Lord of the Dance.

Siamsa Tíre, National Folk Theatre & Arts Centre

Siamsa, pronounced “Shee-am-sa”, comes from the Irish language. The word itself expresses mirth and music, Tíre means ‘of the land’. At the heart of Siamsa Tíre lies a five person professional core group of full-time players supported by selected artists drawn from the local community but trained in the unique Siamsa style and idiom. Full-time and community performers integrate and blend into a dedicated and talented team.

Re: title of march???

@Free Reed - well, thank you for that extra info.

Perhaps either you or ChipZ could post the abc to the tune section?

Re: title of march???

Reflecting (as you do) on the Síamsa March. i seem to recall there was a Ceili Band in Co Louth back in the 50s/60 called The Síamsa. I think that Brian O'Kane, the composer of some lovely marches, played with them....just wondering if there is a connection with this tune?
