Windows 7 and ABC

Windows 7 and ABC

I recently made the "upgrade" to Win7. Unfortunately not all the ABC or MIDI software that I used before are able to make the transition (eg, ABCPlay, MIDIGenie, etc...).

So I'm looking for what programs are able to install and run properly under Win7???

Re: Windows 7 and ABC

ABC Explorer seems to work ok, though I've only used it a little under Win7.

Re: Windows 7 and ABC

I'm sure there are options under Windows that someone running that system will tell you about.
If you want to expand your options, Sun has a cool new toy called VirtualBox, which you can use to run a virtual machine on your computer. Basically, this means you start the VirtualBox program and it's like turning on a second computer, within your computer. You can install linux on this second computer, and all of a sudden you've got access to everything written for the Linux/UNIX platform. This could be handy for you, even if you like running Windows as your main OS.

http://www.virtualbox.org is the url, it's a free download and should be a pretty easy install. It was simple enough on the mac, anyway.

You could use the Tune-a-Tron (http://www.concertina.net/tunes_convert.html) which would cost you nothing and can be used on any computer. It also gives your PDF, MIDI, and JPG files but not TAB.

Re: Windows 7 and ABC

Windows 7 has something called "compatability" mode which is used for running legacy software.

You can use this link to check if your legacy software will run in this mode:

Re: Windows 7 and ABC

Isn't it cute that "compatibility" is a special mode in Windows? In other operating systems, it's usually considered the default... :)

I'm romantically opposed to this thread.

Re: Windows 7 and ABC

Thanks for the tips. I'm not looking for anything online at this point as you can't get the degree of control offered by some of the good programs out there. Unfortunately "compatibility mode" options haven't helped at all for these older programs.

A virtual machine may indeed be the way to go. I will explore that option for sure.

Any programs working in Win7 for you guys in addition to ABC Explorer?

Re: Windows 7 and ABC

I am currently using ABCedit. It works okay with Windows 7, at least at the very basic level that I require.

Re: Windows 7 and ABC

Regarding MidiGenie, it might be worth investigating Tweak Genie 6.0.1
