Low D Whistle Tunes

Low D Whistle Tunes

Does anyone have a list of slow low D tunes? I'd like to 'search' them in i-Tunes, buy, and learn to play with the background music from the CD. Having a tough time finding some.

Re: Low D Whistle Tunes

slow tunes? no

tunes that I played pretty easily when I first started with the low whistle, yes

tunes you can play along with from a recording just starting out on low whistle...I dunno about that either

but if its any good to you, Microsoft Media Player will play things back at half speed, Right click on the play button for playback options

Re: Low D Whistle Tunes

By low D tunes I take it you mean tunes suitable for playing on the low whistle? Do a Youtube search using 'low whistle' 'Overton' or similar.

Re: Low D Whistle Tunes

Some of the O'Cathain and Carolan tunes will work well, for example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zf26A2RaSH8
That's just first one I found, you can search youtube yourself

Also, why not play along to songs.

Re: Low D Whistle Tunes

You should get your hands on some of Cormac Breatnach's albums like The Long Long Note by Deiseal. A lot of the stuff will be played on Low F whistles, but this can be easily transferred to Low D, once you have worked it out on an F whistle.

Cormac Breatnach's style of playing is fantastic, and that's what I would recommend anyhow.

Hope this is of help.

Re: Low D Whistle Tunes

Yes, I would agree totally Murrough. There are actually some great youtubes of Cormac, especially from his Deiseal and Meristem days. I particularly like this clip of Loch Gowna http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPiEUaxHvFw

Re: Low D Whistle Tunes

In passing - A small piece on the low whistle is included in Ireland's entry in this year's Eurovision.
Nice to hear it included, if only for a few bars.

Re: Low D Whistle Tunes

I don't have a list of tunes but Beòlach (a Cape Bretton group) play a tune featureing a low D whistle solo called Jenny Belle lane that can be played either slow or fast. The cd is on iTunes so you should have no trouble finding it.

Hope this helps

Re: Low D Whistle Tunes

If by "slow tunes" you mean airs, you might have to search the titles of various Irish airs and see if any are played on Low Whistle.

It really doesn't matter what instrument is playing the air, really, for you to learn it by playing along. I myself prefer learning airs from the playing of uilleann pipers. But an accordion or whatever recording will still be fine to play along with.

Anyhow here's a very short list of some nice airs you might want to search:

a stor mo chroi
aisling gheal
an brianach og
an buachallin ban
an raibh tu ar an gcarraig
an spailpin fanach
anach cuan
ar eirinn
bean dubh a ghleanna
buachaill caol dubh
carrickfergus
eamonn a chnuic
gol na mban san ar
jimmy mo mhile stor
lagan love
paistin fionn
roisin dubh
sean o duibhir
sliabh geal gcua
spailpin a ruin
taimse mo chodladh
the coolin
the wounded hussar

Re: Low D Whistle Tunes

Jimmy mo mhile stor and The Mist Covered Mountains (Hush Hush), Neil Gow's Lament for his 2nd wife, I'd love to learn them on the low whistle (but can't, my hands are too small to play it I've tried) .
One of the most beautiful ones though is this:

Good luck
