If you get the chance to see ANY band this year....

If you get the chance to see ANY band this year....

...go and see Fianna. I was working on the door for their gig last night at the Fishpond... they're absolutely FANTASTIC! They play a superb mix of Hungarian and Irish/English music (some of it self-penned, and I spotted Nancy Kerr's 'Cave of Many Colours' in there!). Last night they played accoustically, and everything was spot on - it's quite rare for a six-piece to get levels just right when they can't be turned up or down on a desk, but they managed it spectacularly!
There's a superb Double Bassist, a brilliant percussionist on Bongos and an African drum, a fabulous Button Accordionist, a stunning Uilleann Piper/Whistle player, a great Guitarist who I think plays in double drop D and one of the best fiddle players I've ever seen! They also do some great songs... definitely worth going to see. They have a unique sound that's somewhere between Capercaillie and The Wrigley Sisters/Kerr & Fagan... with Eastern influences. Truly stunning in every way.

Have to agree - they're all great musicians. I believe the piper is Alan Burton and the box player is Luke Daniels. The only thing they lack is a bit of stage patter; once they get this sorted they'll be excellent.

Conan. I've noticed this aspect with many of the young bands, these days. Their musicianship is much more developed than their stage presentation. I think that the latter takes years of experience on the road. In the old days, when new bands weren't so obviously talented, the levels of musicianship and stage presentation improved together--more in snyc...

the mix of eastern european (hungerian) music and irish is a very original and new concept, i'm still amazed of the imagination of musicians who always try to stay away from the trends of the music business..

Errrr...Paul, original and new? Is the stuff Andy Irvine and others did in the 60's and 70's original and new?

Luke is a great box player - used to play in a Band called Broderick and before that I believe he played on Riverdance. He has a wonderful way with Eastern European dance music (so I've been told!)

Re: If you get the chance to see ANY band this year....

I have to say, I disagree with the views about young bands and stage patter - I'm (literally just) 17 and play in three bands consisting of people my age. Everyone always commends us on our presentation as well as our musicianship - we have a laugh, relay stories and jokes about the tunes and songs we do, wander around whilst playing to interact with each other (when our instruments allow us!). Also, there are several other bands of similar age, for example Sam Sweeney's Kerfuffle who are excellent in stage patter.... Admittedly we're not quite as funny (rude) as a band EVERYONE should go and see called Last Night's Fun - but we have a go!

From the thirtysomething members of Fianna, thankyou for referring to us as a young band and remember folks! the last gig of a months tour never inspires 'patter'.......
