I'm making a compilation of irish folk for a mate in australia and i've run out of songs on the theme of emmigration to australia, or transport to van diemens land, so if any one knows of good recordings of old songs on such topics please let me know where i can find them, any good emmigration songs will do actually, cheers
Denis O'Reilly, 10,000 Miles away, Maggie May, Jim Jones At Botany BAy,, Shores of Botany Bay, Moreton Bay. The Penguin Australian Song Book if you can find a cop[y is a good resource. Some other songs: Bound For South Australia, The Catalpa. Cobbers Bush Band and The Bushwackers were two of the better known bands in the 70s and 80s, Bushwackers still occassionally have a reunion.
There is a group of songs in mixed Irish and English from Ring, Co. Waterford about local men who were transported to Australia. I jokingly referred to the songs as "The Ring Cycle," and was repremanded by the singer. Sorry, but I can't give you even one name. The songs are gorgeous, though.
You may well struggle to find this but it's a good one.
The band "Barleycorn" have a song called "Australia" on their album - My Last Farewell. It's basically about Irish settlement in Australia and how they have shaped the country - really nice song and some class tenor banjo!
The Overlanders
Streets of Forbes
Jog Along 'Till Shearing
Andy's Gone With Cattle
Travellin' Down to Castlereagh
Song of Artesian Waters
Shearing at Castlereagh
The Free Selector's Daughter
With the Cattle
New Chum Shearer
The Outside Track
Where the Dead Men Lie
The Lights of Cobb and Co.
Old Australian Ways
No More Boomerang
Song of the Wheat
Northward to the Sheds
The Grey Gulf Water
From the CD Undiscovered Australia by Gerry Hallom.
Gerry Hallom was a colleague of Nic Jones - who appears on this CD as a guitarist, fiddler, and back-up singer.
This CD is a compilation from 3 prior Fellside CDs, FE26 "Travellin' Down the Castlereagh" 1981 with Jez Lowe and Nic Jones, FE36 "A Run a Minute" 1983 with Jez Lowe , Pete Cooper, and Chris Coe (from Bandogs with Nic Jones), and FE74 "Old Australian Ways" 1989 with Nic Jones and Jez Lowe, and others.
Good luck finding them - I'd look for reissues of the old Fellside recordings as I'm sure the Music Pangea CD is long out of print.
Snatches of a song which is at the back of my mind involve the words:
"People think I'm crazey;
I don't work because I'm lazey,
but i hang around the pubs
back here in Wooloomooloo"
Good song - and very "Ausie"
There was a book called "Around the Boree Log" which might have what you need. They are very 'old school' verses but someone may have set them to music.

The floral emblem of Australia is the yellow wattle, and there's an absolute diamond of a tune by that name too...

Dragut, cheers! So that explains the title. I always assumed it referred to a painted mud/wicker cottage wall, or fleshy chicken's beard.

"Dennis O'Reilly" and "Shores of Botany Bay" are two good songs where the Irish person celebrates going to Australia instead of moaning about it
