Darn right its a performance. His parents are forcing him to be a professional ukelele player, spending his days in rented halls and squalid hotels, playing for his supper, when he should be watching TV, playing Wii, or something else equally productive.
And just think how he's going to feel in about eight or nine years when he thinks that he is a total chick magnet. Someone will resurrect this very public performance, and he will not be able to walk the halls of his school without a bag over his head.
What if his parents booked him on a West coast (US) tour and he had a night off between gigs. Say he shows up at your session. Would you let him 'perform' at your session?
This kid's my new hero... I'd love to have him come play a few selections for us.
I watched a few other vids of him and he's making his mom laugh and just having fun it looks like to me. There's something inspiring about the pure enjoyment on everyone's part for what's happening, and no apparent academia. I see this vid as a sort of counterweight to some of the over-the-top debates in this forum.
Let's hope his parents don't push him too hard or too fast. I've known several burnt-out child prodigies (on violin) who at the tender age of 16 or so walk away from the music because they were forced to practice to the point of hating playing.
Hmmm. I suspect the dad's career, plus the parent's penchant for uploading clips of their son's performances onto YouTube, speaks of more than simply "playing for their own enjoyment." You can do that without a video camera, and without mugging to the camera, and so to his world-wide audience.
I also suspect this kid could easily grow up loving to perform, to play music for other people. And do it extremely well. All power to him.
I'm sure the kid does the same when the camera is off...so no it's not a performance.
Obviously he's playing for his own enjoyment.
Of course it doesn't matter.
Thanks for the link, Tuckered, I didn't know our hero's dad was a uke master. There is something to be said for being raised in a musical family. I get glimpses of the obvious advantages when people with those circumstances pass through occasionally.
Um... I know I'm bringing up a dead thread here, but I just wanted to point out that the guy in the last clip -- Jake Shimabukuro (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jake_Shimabukuro) -- is in no way this boy's father. He is Hawai'ian, and the kid is Japanese. Moreover, the kid's parent who is uploading the videos says, on his/her Youtube channel, "He and I started playing ukulele only one year ago".
Just wanted to clear up that misconception... how the hell did anyone reach that idea in the first place, that's what I want to know?!

Don't be fooled. He's actually 37 - he just gave up drinking and smoking before he was 5.
