Some would say that's a barndance, if you mean the one that's known as the Curlew Hills.
Do you want an easy one, a tricky one, a well-known one, an obscure one? "Nice" is a bit subjective.
I would like a hornpipe that:
-would be appropriate to play in a competition
-is quite well known- could be recognised by the judges
-is reasonably tricky to play
-has ample space for ornamentation.
This version is a bit slower than we would normally play a hornpipe nowadays, but it was this clip that got me into this tune - I couldn't see the attraction of it until I saw and heard this.
It is a great tune. A piper friend and I used to play it in a set following Poll Hapenny. We played Poll Hapenny at a very slow pace then played Leitrim Fancy at a good hornpipe tempo. Nice.
If it's for a party, "The Banks", but taken the old way, as even Michael Coleman and Winston 'Scotty' Fitzgerald did ~ relaxed and with bounce and a smile... It's just good fun...
But for competition ~ like we always say, stick with what you are familiar and comfortable with. The likelihood of you winning by just tarting up a tune you haven't the time to get intimate with ~ it won't come across as 'natural'. Instead, tell us what you already like and play and maybe we can support your own natural selection? If you don't already have a good store of hornpipes under your bow ~ there's no magic dust, no crossroads I can recommend for you to visit at midnight to get special guidance for the devil's hornpipe...

I am not a fiddler, but Alexander's always struck my fancy. Don't know how it lays under the fingers on the fiddle, though.
