I wouldn't wish to judge a tv program not having the faintest clue about them not even having one . Its a very interesting piece though and thanks for the heads up. A treasury of old clips and stories of the Man himself!
I did notice Peter O'loughlin has blutack on his fiddle bridge! something I was slagged rotten on this site by Will Harmon for suggesting!!
I must disagree. It was an enthralling half-hour and I fully wished that the programme had lasted another 90 minutes.
To some extent it did only skim the surface (and that was down to the time constraints), but, come on, Ennis is a massive subject and, as someone said to me today, how can you make a bad programme about Séamus? They didn't and it wasn't.
Ennis as a subject won't be touched on tv for the next 10yrs because of last nights programme, they should have made a six part series on him and at least then they could have got their teeth into Seámus the man, the folklore, the tunes, the travelling and collecting, the passing on of tradition/legacy etc.
Last nights effort was a quick slideshow for the uninitiated with extremely boring and bad reenactments.
There is very little featured music on "music programmes" these days but last nights hit a new low on that front... terrible
I understand your disappointment, Cathal, but not your hyperbolic reaction.
In case you haven't noticed, Ireland is in the midst of a huge economic melt-down. There simply isn't the money to spend on the kind of project on Ennis that you've described and there may not be such for years to come. There have also been several programmes on Ennis in the past, you know!
I think RTÉ should be congratulated for showing a programme of relatively minor appeal at a peak time in its viewing schedule (just before 'Eastenders'). Few other European broadcasters would envisage such an idea.
Thanks for the heads up Cathal. Only 26 minutes, but better than nothing. I liked hearing Pedar O'Loughlin, Liam O'Flynn, Chris Ennis and others talking of their memories of Seamus.
I think it was stated on the programme that many of the tunes and songs popular today were collected by Ennis. Which ones, I wonder? Is this documented somewhere?
Ó Bhéal go Béal - Séamus Ennis
Ó Bhéal go Béal - Séamus Ennis
RTÉ broadcast a program about the life of Séamus Ennis last night - http://www.rte.ie/player/#v=1070573
The program talked about Ennis's charisma and collecting of music and folklore; however that is exactly what the program lacked - charisma and music!
I thought it was a poor attempt at a radio program on tv, what did ye think??

Why would someone want to put blutack on a fiddle bridge? As a mute? In case you've forgotten the real thing?

Quite liked the TV programme myself by the way.
