A "thesession.org" poll, please take!

A "thesession.org" poll, please take!

I just thought I would try and get an idea of the backround of the general users of this website, I might put up this poll again once or twice later in the year .
If you could leave a comment saying
1) what country, county/state your from.
2) your instrument
(I know people play more than one so please pick your favourite or the one you play the most).
3) What type of music you listen/play the the most (i.e Irish Trad, Scottish Trad, Breton, Northumbian etc.)
4) How do you learn tunes (if not an accompanying) (i.e ABC, stave notation, by ear or other - please list all)
5) where do you get most of your tunes ( cd's, internet, sessions, teacher etc - please list all ways).

I'd ask as people as possible to do the poll so I can get a more accurate result thanks!

Well I'll post the info. up on the thesesssion.org for thesesssion.org and for nothing else,
it should be interesting to see the results with such a wide variety of musicians using the site.

Re: A "thesession.org" poll, please take!

"Your instrument - please pick your favourite..."

My nose, without a shadow of doubt. I pick it 24 / 7, which is a lot more hours than I put in on any other instrument.

The nose was created almost exactly in the middle of the bygone century. It is quite likely in old pitch, but I have never got round to taking it to a tuner. Its scale is highly indeterminate and its melodic range varies considerably from season to season, those of winter chest colds and of summer hay fever evincing something like extremes of depth and height in the notes produced. There may be tenuous similarities with the music of the Turkish hammaluk, gez or nusrat, but I have yet to investigate this, just having made these up.

The presence of notable amounts of house dust mite excreta is the most reliable guarantor of a sustained and energetic performance. At concerts, my fans compete with one another to tip out sacks of the stuff at my feet; that way they get a guaranteed encore, whether I've actually wanted to do one or not.

More general feedback, however, is vastly in agreement that the music of my proboscis neither entertains nor elevates, but solely disconcerts. I find myself, therefore, the bearer of a harried and marginalised tradition. The crass majority spurns it, for what even I concede are pretty clear reasons, while I am fated to perpetuate it, and must therefore belabour my brains to fabricate the most fantastical reasons for doing so.

And then, i suppose, I can call myself a Traditional Folk Nasalist and get grants and handkerchiefs and stuff.

Re: A "thesession.org" poll, please take!

Well, here's a link back to a sort of similar poll of about 3 years ago - http://www.thesession.org/discussions/display/14732

The problem Premier with this sort of thing is apart from obstinate sorts who don't think it's anyones business is that there is no sticky facility (perhaps thankfully) on thesession.org, so your survey will rapidly drift off the radar by tomorrow by which time only a tiny proportion of the members here will have seen it - so it's kinda futile :) Or maybe a snapshot in time - who looked in on one day or so and chose to participate.

Anyway just so I can't be accused of being an obstinate *boll*x*

Ireland - southeast
That's tricky - whistle, flute, concertina in any order.
mostly trad but I'll happily play any ditty that infiltrates.
ear mostly but if I get lazy or frustrated I'll look up a tune book or abc's here.

Re: A "thesession.org" poll, please take!

1. ) Currently based in the county of Lancashire, Northwest England

2. ) Whatever is within reach, and often times just lilting. I love most musical instruments in the right hands, which doesn't necessarily mean my hands. If I lost the use of my hands, and lost my voice, I would still be making tunes in my head, though others may not hear them. They are there now as I type, and they are available whenever I need them.

3. ) Whatever takes my fancy, and sometimes just plucked out of the air or delivered by the fairies and other powers at nature's command.

4. ) By osmosis, through the ears mostly, but I also enjoy and value several forms of notation, including dots and ABCs, and I love exploring different takes on a melody. But, I learn best from a friend, live, and definitely a form of osmosis, as much more is shared and learned than just pitch, rhythm and twiddles. I also learn by physical involvement, movement, rhythm ~ including through dance ~ and from the heart, but a balance between heart and mind...

5. ) See the previous, but I enjoy a good listen wherever it comes from, if preferring live over everything else. Sadly, most of my most valued live sources have long since passed out of this existence. Most of my tunes were/are #4, blessed by the hospitality, generosity, humour and character of others. But I see no need to limit ones resources, I travel through life with open ears and, generally, an open heart... However, to be honest, sessions are not a favoured source...

Re: A "thesession.org" poll, please take!

As far as collecting data goes, this must be painful. How are you going to compile it all? I guess there must be some software that would pull it all from the webpage for you. If not, fuggetaboutit.

1&2: username
3: this music, you know, the one that's mentioned on the home page
4: any/all tools with the ears in charge
5: don't discriminate

Re: A "thesession.org" poll, please take!

I don't think it would be too difficult using an excel spreadsheet - each category with a list of options. You could do simple stats and charts also.

Re: A "thesession.org" poll, please take!

Re answer ( 2 );
I don't think one instrument is enough; what about "Er Indoors, who goes out to a session with a shopping bag full of whistles, flute, ukulele, washboard, bones, spoons, and jews harp, and sometimes a banjo over her shoulder too ( 5-string, NOT tenor ) ?
Even I, that no longer takes a guitar to a session, will have bezuki, concertina, and bodhran for our regular meets.

Re: A "thesession.org" poll, please take!

Well, despite the possibility of raising some hackles with the instruments :) :

1) Minneapolis MN USA area
2) hammered dulcimer, whistles, English Concertina, B/C box probably in order of skill.
3) Various kinds of trad music depending on what catches my ear
4) dots are easy for me, but I try to do most of my trad learning by ear. (Let's not have that discussion again just yet :) )
5) Recordings, friends, reading sessions by myself, internet (dots and sounds not MIDIs) and whatever else.

Re: A "thesession.org" poll, please take!

Osmosis requires a strong solution and a weak solution. As with money, water moves only from weak to strong. Now there's a conundrum. Or is that a carborundum. Illegitimes non carborundum.

# Posted on April 13th 2010 by Steve Shaw

Re: A "thesession.org" poll, please take!

I just liked the analogy of the fact that in sea esturies plant life survives where osmosis happens in the reverse way. So you start off as a weak musical force but as the years go by it builds untill the flow reverses maybe; I like that : ) maybe some day

# Posted on April 13th 2010 by Eòsaph

Re: A "thesession.org" poll, please take!

I realise its counter intuitive which blows my analogy out of the estuary ha ha but it was nice to recolect a bit of biology.

# Posted on April 13th 2010 by Eòsaph

Re: A "thesession.org" poll, please take!

By my osmosis analogy the more musical force you gain the more you absorb!

Re: A "thesession.org" poll, please take!

When the flow reverses, doesn't that mean you start forgetting the tunes you learned?

Then I believe the process is called lossmosis.

3) I invented all forms of music.
