Management for folk artistes.

Management for folk artistes.

Can anybody point me in the direction of any companies/individuals in the UK who represent Folk singer/songwriters?

This is proving to be an almost impossible task, with most companies only interested in mainstream acts.

I really would appreciate any pointers.

Re: Management for folk artistes.

You seem to be one of the people who confuse 'folk' with singer/songwriters.
Whilst these have co-existed in many small gatherings of audiences and performers over the last 40 years or so, the actual connection between them is really minimal.
'Folk' implies being a part of the tradition, part of a continuum of music without known original creator, that exists in the memories of the community, and is continually being replayed and recreated.
A singer/songwriter is an artist ( sic ), a muse, an entertainer. And expects to get paid for it too. You're trying to get into the music biz. Stop calling yourself 'folk', it isn't true, and it isn't helpful.
Go and get yourself an agent, and leave us alone here.
Sorry.

Re: Management for folk artistes.

Dennis,

Two friends of mine from here in Oz who tour the UK regularly were telling me how good their UK management was:

there's a contact tab top right. I'm sure they'll steer you right, as they're both really approachable people, despite being megastars (mention this comment to them if you contact them - they might buy me a pint next time I see them... :-)

Best of luck with it,

Eno

Re: Management for folk artistes.

Why on earth would you want to pay someone else to do your own publicity and gigs?
Do you think they are going to pay you up front? You will be left with nothing, so you might as well go around the folk clubs for a few years, and learn your trade.
If you are any good, you will soon make a name for yourself, and possibly be appreciated more.

Geoff, if you check out his Myspace page, you'll learn that Dennis has been following your advice for over 30 years already.

Re: Management for folk artistes.

I read that Dennis has been suspended until April 7th.
Why ?
What DID he say ?
Is he a troll ?
I think we should be told.

Re: Management for folk artistes.

Oh, apparently he was quite rude about me.
Thank you Jeremy, although I'm not too bothered by it.
"Sticks and stones may break my bones......
........but whips and chains excite me." ( Well, that's what it said on this girls' t-shirt in Kensington High Street. )

Re: Management for folk artistes.

Ive been punting ITM players, singers, bands etc for a few years now.I have never ever taken a penny, but do it for the satisfaction of seeing somone and then punting them onto higher and better things.

I must admit I have also now a lot of really good friends and never short of a drink ot two when we hook up.

Re: Management for folk artistes.

Well done, rab.
What Mr Regan was apparently asking for was an agent for a singer-songwriter, and I was trying to suggest that this was not a folksinger in any shape or form; but he took umbrage at it,
That's ok, we're all more than a swordslength away from each other here, there's no need for anyone to get hurt.
Meanwhile, let's have more punting of ITM. Hup !
