would any banjo players like to list some of their favourite tunes or ones they feel particularly suit the banjo.thought it would be interesting to see which tunes are the most common among banjo players and perhaps give us some ideas on new tunes to learn.
i like to play mcarthys/andy mcganns(the taproom) angelina carberrys setting is nice
and green groves of erin/ flowers of redhill.
and any hank williams song ha.
The nice thing about 4'33" is that it is scored for any instrument.
It must be said, though, that the silence the banjo can produce is unlike any other.
Any and all but some of my favorites are
Monaghan jig
Mist Covered Mountain
Gravel Walk
Paddy on the Turnpike
Listowel Hornpipe
Temperence reel
Tripping Upstairs
The Thrush In The Morning
An Fainne Oir(the D Major 4 part one)
The Mossy Banks
The Road To Garrison(with Nicola Strating playing fiddle)
Mary's Shoes
Sean BuĂ/Green Fields of Woodford
Hammy Hamilton's Jigs
I also have an arrangemnet I play of the Texas fiddle tune "Grey Eagle"
I think what you're finding is that most tunes are "good banjo tunes", and finding commonality between people's lists is going to be difficult.
So why don't you just pick tunes that you like, that other people around you play?
But if you insist on a list, here would be some tunes that pop into my mind that I really enjoy playing on banjo.
Reels:
A Night in Ennis
Never Was Piping so Gay
The Skylark
The Dawn
The Augacashel
Mary McMahon's
The Scartaglen
Humours of Lissadell
Jigs:
Fly in the Porter
Down the Back Lane
Palm Sunday
Black Rogue
Sporting Pitchfork
Rambling Pitchfork
The Castle
Hornpipes:
Pol Ha'Penny
Taylor's Twist
Smell of the Bog
But the reasons that I would choose those tunes have little to do with the fact that I'm playing banjo, and more to do with the fact that I like the tunes, and I enjoy playing them with people that I play with on a regular basis...
