"impossibly hard, yet superb"
Why would you look for impossibly hard tunes rather than just good ones. Anyway there are no impossibly hard good reels for the whistle.
I have in my collection a whistle player playing The Swallow's Tail Reel (the so called Traveller's Version of the reel) The style reminds me of Mary Bergin and maybe it is her, but if I could play the whistle that tune would be No 1 on my list to learn.
few good choons mentioned..so far
4me a few worthwhile difficult ones would be
-Girls of Boisdale - learnt from brian finnegan
-sweeneys buttermilk - learnt off sum mad fella with locks
-stranger at the gate - Barry Kerrs version, easily sourced off you tube or world looks away album
-Rathlin island - Lunasa Kinnity session trk 7, whistle solo Kev Crawford goes nicely with sporting paddy..
---tis good when someone describes a choon as impossible, shows they pay attention to the intricacies.. if u find a tune easy, u r either a pro or you havnt bothered the arse learning it properly. devils in the detail . gd lk
Hydra-headed rampant mutancy has characterised the music and culture of Newcastle since time immoral.
It is easy to explain this today: the sheep-dip goes into the Tyne, the Tyne goes into the water supply, the water supply goes into the beer, and the beer goes into the Folk Degree students.
But why it was so in the distant past, when the environment was more pristine, remains one of the disquieting enigmas of history. Perhaps there was continuous endemic ergotism; perhaps there still is.

Re: Whistle Reels
Try 'The Old Station House'. It can be a challenge on whistle or keyless flute.

Re: Whistle Reels
Try 'Maggie's Pancakes', actually in Bm, not in D as described in the Mustard Pages search.

The quintessential rendition of this tune is on an Alasdair MacCuish & the Black Rose Ceilidh Band CD called 'Stepping Out'. Played like no one else.

), http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/2589 you can play Pressed For Time...
