Any Used Harps or Shops In Or Near Yorkshire England
Any Used Harps or Shops In Or Near Yorkshire England
I have a friend from NJ, going to her "other" house in Yorkshire who just started playing harp, and would like one to have over there. Does anyone have anything used in good shape for sale? Dings don't matter, Levers at least on C & F, 26-34 strings.
Mark Harmer...? Any ideas? You are in UK aren't you?
No Pakistani or Asian harps please. Does anyone have a way to get in touch with Dolphin Harps over there, we've looked, no web site. A reasonably priced new one is not out of the question either. Just something nice and playable, with working levers.
Re: Any Used Harps or Shops In Or Near Yorkshire England
The Early Music Shop at Saltaire would be the place to visit. Incidentally, your friend might cause offence by saying anything anti-Pakistani in that part of the world.
Re: Any Used Harps or Shops In Or Near Yorkshire England
OK... I will alert her. What is the politically correct term?
She's not anti-Pakistani, just that the harps are often terrible, I have had one and so have most of my harp friends at some point. They are rough to play too and the levers don't tend to work, and many don't stay in tune. She doesn't really know enough yet to pick a harp on her own.
Anyway, she won't want one of them. Do you know how their own EMS brand is? Something with decent reliable levers that work, and decent sound and playability.
I don't know if they sell Harps but I'm pretty certain they will know who does. I have been in their store and they are very knowledgeable on all things music.

Greg,,,,
Thanks for the lead on Hobgoblin...whoops... just saw... Leeds, pardon pun! Will pass along to her.
By the way, she is not defining people or races, but country of origin of the instrument, she never tried one yet that was playable, Incidentally her much loved daughter in law is Pakistani, and takes no offense at her not wanting one of these harps. She knows how to recognize them anyway and will say nothing at all and just ask for something else if someone carts one out.
What she wants is a harp that plays easily, sounds good, levers work, that's all. It's nothing racial and shouldn't be taken that way. She is simply trying to avoid a bunch of people trying to sell her one of these privately and wasting their time because she doesn't want one is all, not trying to offend anyone,
Re: Any Used Harps or Shops In Or Near Yorkshire England
Looks to me like the OP was referring to 'country of origin' not the race of the harp.
(or, the race of the harp maker)
Searching old posts indicates that musical instruments made in Pakistan are not
held in high regard. I don't see an issue with some one specifically rejecting
products that have a 'bad reputation'.
If it's un-PC to discuss Pakistani harps....why is it OK
to discuss IRISH harps?
(( irisnevins...I just fancy that, as an act of self-denial, your friend
has given up Pakistani harps for Lent))
Re: Any Used Harps or Shops In Or Near Yorkshire England
Thanks Dave and jfother. The Welsh Shop looks very promising!
Fr. Jack, thanks, harps from "there" they are mostly awful. People complain about the pipes too. There are apparently a few good harps from Pakistan out there, but even if they hold tuning and the levers work, there is the issue of sound, they are just plinky, dull. My friend is pretty new to harp and already knows she doesn't like the sound of these. She wants to avoid lots of people in UK ringing her up or emailing trying to sell her one they don't want.
Seems the Welsh Shop has some nice used harps. That will likely be it.
Re: Any Used Harps or Shops In Or Near Yorkshire England
Ha ha...Julie.... now now....practice makes perfect!
Someone in Edinburgh has offered her a FREE harp, not made in Pakistan, it has some repair issues they think. Does the shop repair? I don't think it's major. Maybe strings, not mention of cracks, maybe needs levers, good regulation. May work.
Re: Any Used Harps or Shops In Or Near Yorkshire England
Edinburgh is not very near Yorkshire though is it? On the other hand, it's Yorkshire's most popular price!
Seriously though, Banks in York (mentioned above) is still pretty good for most things - or used to be anyway, they aren't quite as good as they used to be before Music Room took them over recently. But then I've only been using the shop for 50 years, so what do I know?
Banks have connections all over for instruments, repairs and music. If they don't have it, they "know a man who does", as the saying goes.
Re: Any Used Harps or Shops In Or Near Yorkshire England
Thanks Ebor. She will be driving to see her daughter in Edinburgh during this visit, so this should work. Don't know if the harp is playable. Have sent the other links, thanks!
Re: Any Used Harps or Shops In Or Near Yorkshire England
Hobgoblins (or Stoney End) harps are excellent! I have 2 (floor and lap sizes) and have been playing and traveling with them for years. Sturdy, not fancy, good even tone, better priced than many of similar sizes. Good news all round if they're selling in the UK. Go to www.stoneyend.com. A funny story - I was browsing Custy's Music Shop in Ennis, fall 2007, and had my small harp. The fellow there offered to buy it on the spot, said he can't keep harps in the shop, there are so few about! Sorry, no sale, but it saddened me somehow...

Pleased to be able to help and if I've managed to push some business Helen's way perhaps she won't shout at me to hard about practising my scales

Possibly this is the question which ought to have been asked first - whereabouts in God's Own County is your friend's house?
