I always thought they were peculiarly grotesque implements of colonic irrigation devised by members of the Newcastle Literary And Philosophical Society for use on the insane in the early c19. I have never seen them as particularly erotic.

Presumably on the basis of the tune An Phis Fhliuch which O'Farrell is supposed to have played on the pipes to entertain the ladies.

No - the real, primal, minotaural bass is what impacts your system and psyche when you are trying to swim downwards through players to get back into your place, and a bass drone gets stuck up your ear.

This has happened to me. It was not erotic, but it certainly made an impression.
