I'm glad to say that I have reached the stage where I can't name my favourite tune, there are so many class ones.
Though I will never get tired of playing Lafferty's... or Farewell to Erin or Connaughtman's Rambles, Humours of Lisadell, Bunny's Hat, Sweeney's Buttermilk... damn it I knew I couldn't pick out a favourite
So many of them! But a shortlist would include The Knotted Cord and The Otter's Holt, recorded so effectively by Planxty and Matt Molloy / The Bothy Band respectively. I remember my excitement at learning these tunes early on, and making the breakthrough to being able to play them fluently and up to speed: the (or a) little figure playing in the spotlight on the front of Planxty's first album could now, as it were, be ME...
Ah yes nicholas the Otter's Holt, listen to the version on "Music at Matt Molloy's it's perfectly balanced then followed by another gem "McFadden's Handsome Daughter"
I love the melody that is the basis for the wonderful set of variations that makes up the slow movement of Beethoven's quartet in E flat, Op.127. Or the first subject theme of the opening movement of Mozart's final piano concerto.
I'm fickle as well and I tend to get fixated on whatever I'm learning at the time at the moment its Padraig O'Keefes and The Donegal Lasses. But constant favourites are Banish Misfortune and The Maids of Mount Cisco, also The Holly Bush and Lucy Campbells.
I've jokingly referred to the Tarbolton as my "desert island tune" - that if I had to spend the rest of my life on a desert island and could only bring one tune with me, it would be that one.
Fortunately, that's an absurd hypothetical, and there are plenty of tunes that I love - including, alas, more than a few that don't love me back. (Otter's Holt, I'm looking at you.) And for some reason, I've never heard a B minor tune that didn't leave me smitten.
For sessions, my favourite tune is "The Exile of Erin." It's a cracking reel that feels like it wants to play itself. Outside of a session, my favourite tune is probably "Waterman's." I'm a sucker for 7/8.
I suspect that in a slightly different universe, I might have enjoyed Banish Misfortune. However, that jig is the one tune that is consistently led by someone I rather dislike playing with, and so I have refused to learn it.
TD&M - ours is a similar situation. About 7 years ago Blemish Misfortune was the one tune many of us knew collectively at out local session. As a result, we played the shight out of it until it reached a point of total over-saturation. I don't think that tune has seen the light of day in our town in quite a while. Most of us are completely tired of it.
Or Ni Fios (last tune on the Connie set) from Slide's Flying Pig. I'm lucky enough to own a recording of them playing it live at a teaching week in Alsace - deadly!! Because my mate was doing the sound. And this live recording is seriously potent!
The last tune of Tredudon from Overneath by Slide is also sweeeet! i learnt it as a kid as the "Eel in the Sink" - though not like that lol!
Actually - I'm looking for some new tunes. Some good polkas would be appreciated, and mazurkas. Getting a bit stale musically.
YOUR favourite tune?

I'm running through "The Tennessee Waltz". For a modern weepie, the tune has great potential.
