I was drinking heavily and playing with superglue while looking at youtube and found this while searching for klezmeer tunes. What do you think? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jHqFlS3gNMs
Re: What do you think of this other fiddle player?
I think hes good.... "that scrunchy noise" is called a tremello (classical term for it) and its used widely in irish trad fiddle playing. It gives the tune some colour and variation....
Frankie Gavin is the greatest fiddle player tho....
Re: What do you think of this other fiddle player?
I dont know very much about classical music.. I play strictly trad but i do music for the leaving cert so i learned what a tremello is!! And OK its me!! :P
Re: What do you think of this other fiddle player?
You're wrong. The dots are inside his fiddle and he's obviously looking at them through the f-holes.
Btw, it's good in that video to see bowing that really is parallel to the bridge - an example to us all, and one of the secrets of his tone. Which reminds me of an intermediate standard fiddle player I saw at a workshop last year. She had evidently misunderstood this precept and thought it meant bowing parallel to the end of the fingerboard, which is true in the vast majority of cases; but in her case the end of the fingerboard was not parallel to the bridge and was cut away at quite an angle towards the G-string. The luthier's idea must have been that no-one ever puts their fingers down at the dusty end of the G-string so why have heavy fingerboard ebony in that area (not true actually - Bazzini's spectacular and notorious "La Ronde des Lutins" requires it, for one). Anyway, the lady's bowing was consistently parallel to the end of this particular fingerboard and so her tone was nowhere as good as it should have been. A certain English luthier has something to answer for
Re: What do you think of this other fiddle player?
I always find that playing Bazzini's La Ronde des Lutins is a bit difficult on my usual fiddle. My fingers keep getting stuck in the powdered rosin that's been building up. Lucky I have a spare fiddle just for that piece.
Re: What do you think of this other fiddle player?
hehe, Tommy only sounds laid back. Try playing a few strathspeys with him when he's in full swing. For the craic, see if you can fit in more ornaments than him

Thanks for the link.
I have not had much time for the pursuit of other genres than Irish and related Scots lately, but when living in NYC I managed to get a toe damp with the klezmer scene. Brilliant stuff, some of it.
I use to try to catch the Klezmatics whenever possible, just a lovely band. Iilya is pretty impressive, too. Love the commissar look, too.
What manner of accordion is that he is wrestling with?
Re: What do you think of this other fiddle player?
Re Mr Peoples - I was delighted to see him go for that high c' with his little finger. I'd thought I was the only person to do that and that it was a bad habit! I'm still not as good as him though ... ... (sigh)
Re: What do you think of this other fiddle player?
The thing about Tommy is, he's got such a history in the music, the groups, the 70s etc and all of his accomplishments that even if you could play just like him, note for note, you still would not *be* Tommy Peoples.
Far better to take inspiration from him and polish your own style of playing. Become an excellent player for yourself, don't just work for years trying to be a clone of Tommy (or anyone else for that matter).
Re: What do you think of this other fiddle player?
I checked out the documentary on youtube on Mr. Peoples, and one comment was dead-on target - on meeting him for the first time, one of his friends asked, "Who does he lay/sound like?" and the answer was, "He plays like Tommy Peoples."

And why's he keep doing that scrunchy noise with his bow? Someone should give him a few lessons in tone production.

Re: What do you think of this other fiddle player?
Never going to get anywhere either, playing right up the pointy end of the bow like that ...

Yes, Rook, but did you find any good Klezmer tunes?

The dots are plainly visible all over the place behind the set.

Perhaps he (the luthier) got a kickback from the local chiropractor.

Re: What do you think of this other fiddle player?
I prefer to render Bazzini's La Ronde des Lutins on the tenor banjo with kazoo intermezzo.

Re: What do you think of this other fiddle player?
I'm a big fan of Tommy Peoples myself. Sweet, laid back music with nice ornaments. Love his album with Kevin Crawford
But that's coming from a whistle player, so idk.

Hey Shanty -
I did.
Here you go...

Think we can pull off a Johny Moynihan move, and drag this instrument into the Irish scene?
Loved this bit from himself.

Rook - If it's Klezmer fiddle you're after, then this is hard to beat:

There are some clips of her on 'the tube', but nothing that shows off what she's capable of.

Ebor:

Practice as much as Tommy, play as much, learn from the same musicians as he has, and, with a little luck, who knows -
give it thirty-forty years and it can happen.
Cheer up.
