Oidhche Mhath Leibh

Oidhche Mhath Leibh

Does anyone know where I can sheet music for this song? The only recording of it I can find is a version on YouTube that may be sung in German. I found the phonetics, but I need to know how it goes.

Hi Adam!

Amazing request and I know where you can get it in Scots Gaelic! Oidhche Mhath Leibh (Goodnight to you)

There is a beautiful recording of it by the Melbourne Scottish Fiddle Club and the album is called Gates of Gold.

Try this address here and through the links get in touch with Matthew or Judy. They're fabuloous people and I'm sure they would source the words and help you.

I've heard this sung twice by them and it is stunning!

Hope this is of some use for you

All the best Brian xx

Here's the melody line. That German choir on YouTube is doing it in Gm. You could play that on a C whistle I suppose. But I'll include it here in Am and Bm too, to to fit better on a D whistle. If the abcs are greek to you, just copy the one setting here you want and paste it into the converter to make sheet music here: http://www.concertina.net/tunes_convert.html

Oh, and then spend some time teaching yourself how to learn tunes by ear. It's worth the time and effort and isn't all that hard--the more you do it, the easier it gets. And opens up a whole world of music, free from ink and pixels. :-)

Re: Oidhche Mhath Leibh

You'll also find it in Gaelic on a recording that was originally entilted Ossian by the eponymous group, but which appears in the recordings section here as Celtic Music And Songs From Scotland.

I'm being dense and haven't worked out how to make this a link. The recording is also possibly out of print, but I reckon it's worth seeking out if you can, and not just for that track.

Re: Oidhche Mhath Leibh

Thanks for that Ron!

That had escaped me. I've lost a few grey cells on the way and now that you mention it I remember hearing Ossian doing it in Liverpool many years ago at The Liverpool Traditional Folk Club

Cheers
