Well having now purchased my RR M&E number the next part of the expenditure is to find someone able to repair my treasured wooden flute. Does anyone know anyone experienced with antique flutes. It's going to need recorking, repadding and all the keys taken off, cleaned and reset. It was made in the early 1800s and has silver keys, rings and embouchure and needs loving care. Luckily no cracks anywhere but it hasn't had an overhaul for at least 20 years! - too busy playing.
Do you know who the maker is? You should try the WoodenFlute mailing list - if there's anything the regulars there don't know about flute making / repairing, it's either not worth knowing or hasn't been invented/discovered yet.
Where are you? (Planet, country, etc). There's David Migoya, for example: http://www.fyfer-restorations.com. And most wooden flute makers do repairs too.
Breandan - where are you, when we need you to save a damsel in distress -- BreanDAN!?! ...BREANDAN!!! come in, yer tea's oot!
OK, then. Hi sara - we met briefly in the Blythe Hill Tavern a few weeks ago - I was the (other) flute player....Breandan, when he wakes up, might well refer you on to Sam Murray. Whom, I have heard from sources other than Mr. Carson (for whose opinion, BTW, I have unqualified and unreserved respect. Full stop.) is a remarkable repairer. Sam Murray that is. Check these links to previous comments:
It;s a PVC (plastic) flute made by Michael Cronolly according to measurements he took from an antique Rudall&Rose flute. It doesn't look anything like a Rudall&Rose flute, by the way. I have Michael's old model, and i've tried the "R&R" model and i think the "R&R" is superior to the old model.
When i say "Michael's old model" i mean the old style M&E flute, not the antique he used as a model. They're both great flutes, but the "R&R" model is more focused and even a little louder.
Just logged on as back to the grind of real work again. Thanks so much for all the advice so far.
I'm in London, well Epsom which is close to London UK. My flute is made by JF Moffatt in London - I havn't been able to find him in any books as yet so I guess he can't be very famous but it is a lovely flute.
Thanks too to Ken who emailed me the details of Clive Denman in Windermere with a personal recommendation.
Hi Danny - Looking forward to Brendan waking up on this one!!! The Chaucers gang should be down the Blyth on Thurs as we have a PRACTICE! - so if Mel lets us out on time we will be there - I'll bring the M& E!!
Thanks again everyone - any more suggestions on repairers very welcome
Happy Monday!
I recommend John Dodd at Topwind (http://www.topwind.com/) - they're near Waterloo Station. He made a lovely job of repadding and recorking my Williams flute, and has specialized in flute repairs for years.
Does he do wooden flutes at Topwind or is it just silver ones? His website looks a bit geared to classical stuff. It certainly would be closest for me.
Sarah - Jon is the repairer for the shop. The shop itself does sell mostly classical style flutes. He *does* service and repair simple system wooden flutes, and is always happy to see "one of us", as Irish music is now his passion, despite being classically trained. Jon is a *very* nice guy, and will tell you straight whether or not he can do what you require. And I've found his prices reasonable -- to the extent that I've had to argue with him sometimes to TAKE what we had actually agreed! He had tried to do work for me for free - I wasn't having it! no kidding! --don't tell him I said that though.
Well I did ring John and he sounds great. Going to take the flute in for a look over next week and take it from there. Better do a few more gigs and earn some money!!!!

Re: Wooden Flute Repairer
Hi y'all [rubbing blear out of eyes].
Sam does a superb job but he can take forever to do the work.
His address is the Old Forge, New Street, Galway.
Phone number is 00353 9153 2848
You can post to him and he will return same way - so you don't have to make the trip to Galway.
He repaired my terribly wounded Monzani and Hill and you can hardly even see where he did the repair.
No hesitation in recommending him!
