Manx Tunes

Manx Tunes

Anyone have any suggestions on a few Manx tunes - looking for jigs and hornpipe type tunes - I'm somewhat familiar with Manx folk songs (i.e. those with Manx lyrics), but not overy familiar with what's out there for session type tunes.

Thanks!!

Re: Manx Tunes

There are a few scattered about on site here. There are regular sessions on the island, mixed, and there have been a few publications over time. The following are still in print and available:

"Kiaull Vannin: A Source Book for Manx Tunes"

"Rinkaghyn Vannin: Dance of Mann"

I still haven't been able to shake out the few I added here some time ago, but I'm pretty sure they were jigs... If all else fails I'll add another one just for you, if it isn't already here. ;-)

Return the Blow aka Frog Dance aka Hyndaa Y Builley (the dance that it goes with is a bit nauseating but the tune is OK):

Re: Manx Tunes

As happens, Irish tunes are also found in old Manx collections, like this one ~

I haven't managed yet to put some time aside but will return to the search for you and add something too...

Re: Manx Tunes

Brilliant, and obviously productive. Thanks for the time and generosity of making such resources available to others...

It's been mad here Kavik, I will get back to things. Aside from other things out of my control, I have music-related work I promised to others that needs to be met and completed...

Re: Manx Tunes

Hello. If you're looking for collections of Manx tunes, especially ones that are played in the sessions, then you need to get hold of Kiaull yn Theay 1 and 2. There's now also a third book out which has been released within the past year. It's got a few more of the modern tunes in it (ones that have featured on recordings etc), plus some more transcriptions that have been added. A lot of the tunes that people play in sessions are from songs, but with regards to KyT book three, more of them are just standalone tunes because that's what more of the (younger) musicians over here at the moment are composing. Please say nice things about the chords because I was paid to write them in for most of the tunes! (and the colour scheme too - very important!) There are further plans to bring out book four. If you're looking for teaching aids, then try Gow Ayrn (Manx Heritage Foundation). Mixture of songs and tunes aimed at primary aged children. Contact the Heritage Foundation - ask for either Breesha Maddrell or Chloe Woolley - and they should be able to help you out with sourcing the books. They have a fairly up to date website as well.

Re: Manx Tunes

PS - as far as tune types go - traditionally wise - lots of jigs, tunes that perhaps you might call slides, slow tunes, waltzes (but not in the dum ching ching sense). Lots in Em, D and G major etc. Not much in the way of 'fast' reels or hornpipes really (unless someone plays them at breakneck speed) - what reels there are tend to be dance tunes. More recently, lots more jigs, a few faster reels (outside influences) I guess. There's a few slip jigs that I've written and I've taken to writing in stupid keys as well, like C/F minor, E/B major. Hope I haven't waffled too much.
