My app Tunepal has made it onto the App store. You can now search a database of over 12,000 tunes by playing 10 seconds of the tune into your iPhone. Ive been testing it over the past month or so in various environments including noisy sessions and it's almost 100% accurate in identifying the tune.
Tunepal also geotags all queries, so you can use the built in Map to plot the tunes you have tagged. Its actually very cool as now you can use Tunepal to answer questions like “what was that tune I heard in O’Donohue’s last week?” and all you have to do is look at the tunes on the map in Tunepal.
It costs 3.99 on the App store. Please let me know what you think of it and if it works ok for you. You can leave feedback here, or on my blog:
That's great Bryan, I've been looking forward to this app. Just downloaded it - will try it out on a few tunes over lunch. Cost is £2.99 not £3.99 though ... get it while it's cheap!
Mmmm doesn't seem to be working well for me - recorded three common tunes into it (played by Michael Clarkson on flute) and for Contentment is Wealth and Irish Washerwoman it suggested Sadegurer Khosidand and for Bucks of Oranmore it suggested Graemsay. Can't say I've heard of either of them.
BTW While it works very well for live playing, it is not like shazam. It wont tag tunes from CD's very well. You have to play the tune yourself for tunepal to recognise it
As I was saying, you've hit the nail on the head, I was playing them through my stereo. Just played a handful of tunes on my D flute and it correctly identified them all. Looks like we're away!
thanks and sorry I didn't have time to call u yet. We had a big event in the college yesterday - a launch of a new course and I've been flat out with tunepal.I'll give u a shout next week. I love your apps btw.
Btw it requires Internet access, so ifyou are connected via wifi it should work on an iPod - but I don't have one so I can't test it. Maybe you could try it and let me know. If it doesn't work for you you can always get a refund
@eiluned
Yes, it will. However, the iPod Touch requires a hotspot for Internet access, so you are restricted as to where you can use it.
I tried it on some of the nameless recordings in the Comhaltas Archive (solo concertina). If the sound quality is not too bad/distrorted, even those tunes are identified correctly - in spite of the "explosions"!
I have the app and find it works well in finding a name for clean concertina tracks (I used Aogan Lynch's tutor tracks). However the names it drags up for tunes are seldom the one on the track title. While this could be because I am using recorded tracks and I note your rider regardiing these, it brings up a constant issue with ITM tune names; that there are sometimes many names for a tune. Perhaps Tunepal does this and I have not come across an instance yet, but would it be possible to list alternate names for the tunes?
I downloaded it yesterday, And I have tested on a sindt whistle..and it works lovely.
There was a tune I was thought a while back, I did not know the name of it, for the 2.99 it was worth it just to get that...has it happed the tune was " the First slip"
Fair play to the developer..I love technology but I love Irish music more....
So it works on an iPod. Im working on a new release which I hope to have out next week. I'll fix the constant prompting about your location and a little bug I just discovered on the map (its meant to centre on the most recently tagged tune, but it actually centers on the first tagged tune). Also I should be able to improve the transcription and general accuracy and speed of tagging. Please feel free to send me suggestions here or on the blog or facebook page
Tunepal on the iPhone returns the single closest match from the database of 12,000 ABC's. The ABC's are all pre processed to remove ornamentation, expand the parts etc. If the transcriber has included a variation, then that is indexed seperately. If the transcriber has included alternative titles in the ABC, then that will be displayed in the ABC when you get it. Unfortunately this means that you will occasionally get "Gan Anim" as the title. Not sure what to do about that. I think I'll change it so that if the closest is called Gan Anim, then it should return the second closest match
In the release I am planning for this week, I will add:
1. Display of the alt title in the message box if the tune has one
2. A user configurable delay before recording starts to give you the time to pick up your instrument
Hopefully this will be up on the app store by Friday (obviously a free update for existing owners), given Apple's fast turnaround of the release last Friday
Thanks for letting me know about the titles, I now see how hard it is. At thesession.org the alternate title is not often in the abc but on the tune page under "also known as..." Many of these would not fit in any reasonable screen, ie. the Frost is All Over has around 20 names. If these were somehow reachable in the search (I have absolutely no idea if this is possible) it would need a selectable "see alternate names" feature which would need different parameters for each site. Thinking far ahead, to the point of impossible, if the prog was interactive with the site itself, it could focus on the name most often consulted as a first choice.
Well... one thing you can do is hit the web button in Tunepal when viewing a tune. That will bring you to the source on the web where the tune was indexed from. In the case of a tune from thesession.org, it will bring you to the tune on thesession.org and you can view the discussions and alt titles there

Re: Tunepal is now Live on the App store
Are you playing them yourself? Also what key is your flute?
If you are playing in say Eb for example, you need to adjust the "Fundamental" on the preferences screen. By default its "D" - concert pitch
The transcription is designed and tested to work from live instruments. It wont identify tunes from recordings or the radio like Shazam does

Re: Tunepal is now Live on the App store
Any chance of you setting out your policy on duplicate tune names?
# Posted on February 28th 2010 by cag
Re: Tunepal is now Live on the App store
I would find a record delay useful it could be set in preferences say a 0, 3 or 5 second delay. Handy when recording oneself.
