Hi folks,
I have been very recently been given a loan of a Uilleann chanter (made by Eugene Lambe) by a friend, and purchased a set of bellows and a bag etc, all of which seem to be playing fine (shame about the person using them though…..). This is a great opportunity for me to try things out before having to spend a more significant sum on a chanter or a complete practice set of my own.
I’m currently waiting delivery of the Clarke book & the first tutor DVD from NPU, and am getting back into the swing of using a set of bellows after a two year gap from playing the Scottish Smallpipes.
I’m very conscious of the fact that for an instrument like this some face to face instruction is very valuable, not just for the playing, but also for things as simple a holding the chanter properly while playing it / bellows technique etc, but my problem is I’m pretty sure there is no one locally (Dumfries and Galloway) I could get guidance on the basics.
Does anyone know of tutors in Southern Scotland (including Glasgow & Edinburgh) who would be amenable to giving at least some basic instruction/ advice to an adult beginner?
My other possible alternative is a 60 mile drive to Stranraer, and a short hop on a ferry to either Belfast or Larne, though this is certainly not something I could keep up on a regular basis, financially speaking, but I could manage it occasionally. Can anyone suggest possible opportunities in either of these places?
NPU is a great resource. There is online tutoring. There is a wealth of info on the site. You'll need to become a member to access the good stuff. http://www.pipers.ie/
Yes I've bought a couple of things from the shop as mentioned, and had a quick look at the tutor section, and noted you need to be a member of NPU for access, I'll no doubt sign up as soon I have some spare money., I take it the videos are useful?
I was hoping they would have had a register of tutors or suchlike but I certainly couldn't see anything....
Its very early days yet, we'll see how it goes, at the very least its currently making me feel a lot better about my whistle playing ;)
Try the Uilleann Obsession site too. The Crowley tutor is a free download. In the FAQ section scroll down to Tadhg Crowley Uilleann pipes tutor. http://www.uilleannobsession.com/faq.html
Thanks Big Davy, I recognise the name from the music events organised in Moniaive, and I know Hugh Taylor, who is the main man for the Folk Festival, Guitar Festival etc etc I can make further enquiries via him.....
Ceolachan, thanks very much. Strangely enough, I checked my inbox this morning, and lo and behold, Silver Spear had very kindly dropped me a line and offered to help......

Go to the Chiff and Fipple Uilleann Pipes site too.
http://forums.chiffandfipple.com/viewforum.php?f=6
You'll find lots of help there too.
There are a couple pipers somewhere near you but being from the US I'm not able to put you in touch with them.
Best of luck to you!

Duh, I'm still needing coffee, you ARE in touch with NPU already. Did you check out the tutoring section?

Hi markt123
I believe there is/was a piper (Paul Lyttle) in the Moniaive area.
