Accompaniement on Guitar And Bouzouki

Accompaniement on Guitar And Bouzouki

Hi All

Ive recently started teachin accompaniement on both guitar and bouzouki in irish music in Dublin City

I have extensive experience of playing both instruments to a high professional level

I currently play guitar and tenor guitar with John Carty's band "At the Racket" and i play bouzouki with John Mc Sherry's Band "At First Light"

Ive been lucky enough to have worked with and learn from musicians such as Frankie Gavin, the group Teada (standing in for Sean Mc Elwain), Enda Scahill, Derek Hickey, Edel Fox, Dave Sheridan

If you want to find out more for yourself or maybe for friends, feel free to conact me via this discussion or directly to my member account. Id be glad to chat about any inquiries,

Thanks all,

Mick.

Re: Accompaniement on Guitar And Bouzouki

If I might be so bold as to comment;
while I couldn't argue with your description of yourself, the more adjectives and descriptions you pile in the less I want to know you, however great you are.
It's all a bit overblowing the trumpet.
Just a basic description of the course would have been sufficient.

"The longer he talked of his honour, the more we counted the spoons."

Re: Accompaniement on Guitar And Bouzouki

I completely disagree with "Guernsey Pete", no disrespect intended.

He's letting prospective students know his experience level as a professional musician. A teacher has no need to hide that.

He listed his current bands and then said - "Ive been lucky enough to have worked with and learn from musicians such as ...", far from bragging I got the humble & nice vibe from this guy.

Mick, best of luck with your teaching gig in Dublin.

Re: Accompaniement on Guitar And Bouzouki

I put this forward as, having both wife and daughter as English graduates, they are constantly going on about editing texts to remove the fluff and the redundancies. ( Dan Brown is a particular object of derision .)
I've no objection to the gentleman and his endeavours, but he could, for instance, have written
"...20+ years of experience working with professional and recording bands in the ITM field..."
and that would have covered everything without overstating or name-dropping.
Style is all.
I do, still, wish him all luck in his efforts.

Re: Accompaniement on Guitar And Bouzouki

John,.....your version is better i think!

Itrad, thanks for the kind words.
as, i Trad points out, i was merely trying to avoid sounding like i was name dropping....
im not that kind of person, in fact i hate all that bullsh*t that goes alog with some peoples egos.

Guernsey Pete,
I will say again, because this is how i feel, i do feel lucky to have worked with and continue to work with those mentioned before.
Why?, because after listening to them and looking up to them musically for years and trying my best to absorb the musical lessons to be learned form them, i was then fortunate to meet them, and play with them, and more importantly get to know them as the humble unassuming people they also are.

If you see something wrong with that then it would seem you feel aggrieved for some strange reason and for that, rather than me being offended, quite the opposite, i would just query your need to post what you did.

Because, when you get a certain distance in music, and what i have achieved is only gratifying to me in a personal quiet way, you realise there is no room for egos, or cynicism, or jealousy, and to be honest, i feel these must have taken hold of you at some stage, for you to write a cynical a bitter response to my add for no good reason.

Yours,

Michael mc cague.

Sent you a message Michael. Let me know if you got it ok.

Re: Accompaniement on Guitar And Bouzouki

It's all in the perception about style, isn't it ? When you have to sell yourself, and that is, after all, what you are trying to do, in some way, how do you go about it ? The big puff, or the simple understatement ?
I'm not trying to knock the experience or the people you have been lucky enough to work with, just that you might have written these things ( more ) simply, and therefore better.
Still, good luck in this.
PS No hints about preferred tunings and styles -a few clues there might help prospective students.

Q; What do you call someone who hangs around with musicians ?
A: A viola player.
I seem to have strayed away from ITM towards the classical field there....

Sent you the message again Mick.

I have to say Mick, i can't see any sign of grieviance in Pete's comment, just a helpful piece of advice. What's more, despite your reply, I feel the next time you advertise your wares, you might be wiser to heed some of what Pete says, instead of questioning his motives.

Re: Accompaniement on Guitar And Bouzouki

I can't see anything overly egotistical or boastful in the initial posting. It is probably best though that you both just agree to differ and leave it at that. The potentially upcoming row will not do anyone any good.

Re: Accompaniement on Guitar And Bouzouki

I agree No Cause. There are so many jokers with '25 years experience in ITM' (does anyone say ITM in the real world?) now teaching and offering their advice online that real tutors should be encouraged, not criticized for reassuring potential learners with their credentials. Michael, good luck with the teaching. The discussion part of this website is more about wannabe nitpicking (not aimed at anyone in particular) than it is about traditional music. The actual useful content is massively outweighed by the bull.

Re: Accompaniement on Guitar And Bouzouki

no problem at all everyone.
there'll be no rows!!
i take everthing on board.
and i suppose i could have given more about what i do in teaching, but i didnt want the post to be that overdetailed as i was just puttin the feelers out there.

I play in Dropped D tuning for most trad, but i played in DADGAD for a cople of years first. i also have an interest in the blues and jazz and so i know how to accompany trad fairly well in standard tuning using "more appropriate voicings" rather than thebeginner type folk chords.
Thats part of the reasn i didnt advertise tuning of the guitar because i know i can teach a fair bit on each tuning.

Anyway guys/girls,
thanks for the honesty.
I'll do my best in future, just want to get into teaching as i actually enjoy it and being a musician i tend to have time on my hands (joke).

Mick

Re: Accompaniement on Guitar And Bouzouki

Look at your own writing Guernsey Pete. Your grammar and punctuation are terrible, and your style is horrid.

Re: Accompaniement on Guitar And Bouzouki

I see absolutely nothing offensive in the OP, and Mick's humble approach to this shined through, along with his strong credentials.

Absolutely, Will!

Some people who post here really do want all the shortbread without unwrapping the packet.

Re: Accompaniement on Guitar And Bouzouki

Well, Guernsey Pete has a habit of wandering into a thread to criticize the tone or "style," while contributing nothing to the substance. As though this is some sort of literary competition. In which case I nominate Guernsey Pete's own bio for "best verbose puffery." :-D

Re: Accompaniement on Guitar And Bouzouki

I *do* enjoy the irony of G. Pete, thanks to his own posting style here, looking more the arrogant puff than the OP. :-)

Now, Miss LH, lets not be picking fights, now. ;-)

Re: Accompaniement on Guitar And Bouzouki

No, no, not what I'm trying to do. Just suggesting that Pete doesn't have to act as the fashion police here. And enjoying a chuckle....

Re: Accompaniement on Guitar And Bouzouki

Well, my family criticize my style all the time...."You're not going out dressed like that!", etc....
And I know I'm a bit of a monster, it's the Tyrannosaurus Syndrome, wading in and causing chaos......

Re: Accompaniement on Guitar And Bouzouki

And biogs are not to be taking seriously, unless you really want to. They can impart a little information and much embroidery.
Like Zina Lees' used to when I first came on this forum.
( There's a pun in there for those who know what Zina does for a living. )

# Posted on February 15th 2010 by Guernsey Pete

Re: Accompaniement on Guitar And Bouzouki

Pete, if you're talking about Zina's fanciful version of her bio, it just so happens that I wrote that, as a joke.
