I'm looking for the words to a ballad I've heard sung around Dublin called "The Portuguese" - its about a man who looses his mot to the portuguese man after her plies her with baby cham.
Many Thanks,
Paddy
Frank Hart recorded it as "The Maid from Cabra West" on his CD 'Daybreak and a Candle End' the words below are from that version.
The Maid of Cabra West
It’s all for the love of a fair young maid that in Cabra-west did reside
Meself-I-lived up in Donnybrook it is a one and fi’penny ride
But there was a fly in the ointment now that you very seldom see
For although I loved her terrible well, she was in love with a Portugee
Now he was a nasty piece of goods Gonzales was his name
And he couldn’t wait for to get his hands on Concepta who was me dame
So I made a vow be the Grand Canal that I would do him in
For I did-not like them Portuguese, and in particular I didn’t like him
So I follee’d him up to Grafton Street one evening just for fun
Around be the Mercers hospital, next door to the Bartley Dunne’s
I spied them sitting in a corner seat they were kissing and holding hands
And there he was seducing her with pints of Babychams
So I followed him up to his lodgings in Rathgar or thereabouts
And as he walked up the alleyway sure I battered him inside out
Well he gave out many’s an oath and swear ‘til he was dead I’m sure
Then I lifted up the manhole-lid and I dropped him down the sewer
Now when the moth she heard of this she made me life a hell
And all for the sake of peace and quiet sure I did her in as well
And as now I’m up before the judge to answer for me crime
He says I didn’t mind the first one son, but not the second time
Now it’s all for the love of a fair young maid and her Portuguese sailor boy
For the passionate love of that fair young maid I’ve landed in Mountjoy
And if ever I get out again me life I’ll change you’ll see
And I’ll marry with a mott from Walkinstown who, wouldn’t look at a Portugee
Yes, the original was about the East End of London, but was considerably funnier than the TV show (but so's being sick). I think Derek Brimstone wrote it.
I can't thank you enough for the lyrics.
A good man and fellow band member died a few years ago and we are having a memorial this Friday. This was Declan's song and I'll sing for it all, thanks to you.
