I am playing at an open mic night this Saturday at my local Irish pub. I hope to wow the crowds with my rendition of this fine tune that I found being played on YouTube by a great Irish fiddle player. I don't want to play any common or garden tune that all the folkheads will know.
Anyone else notice that a lot of the trolling and slagging tailed off during the festive season. Season of goodwill to all men and all that. It's certainly back with a vengeance now.
Reminds me of the "out-takes" on the special edition DVD of Toy Story 2. There's a brilliant one of a couple of the barbies just after the director has called cut. The grins drop and they have a lovely little conversation about how these long takes make their cheek muscles ache. Brilliant
I noticed she was billed as a Celtic fiddler, not as Irish. Thus avoiding any charges of false advertising, I suppose...she doesn't really approach the tune in an Irish style...
woD, do some searching for other performances of the same tune on YouTube and get some other ideas of how to approach this tune (that is, if this request is serious, and you are not just pulling our leg).
Knowing nothing about her, I presume she is a classical violinist but they are not all like this. There are quite a few who actually could play Drowsy Maggie.
Just as some of the great fiddlers do a mean Bach partita.
Her problem is obviously the clap. It slows down her dancing and stops her moving rhythmically. She should try to ignore it, although that is rather difficult in the circumstances.
I noticed, in one of the comments on Youtube to that original posting, someone said that this girl was so great she had her own page on Wikipedia.
Nope.
I'm not sure that would be any indication of greatness, but, nope. Not by my search anyway.
I know many would say to just learn it by ear, which is all well and good when you have the time. But if you have a "last minute" request and you're still relatively new to playing by ear, well, the dots can come in handy.
If you do some quick checking, you can find that the young lady in the video is a beauty pageant contestant (was Miss City of Orange 2008) and the video is likely her "talent" part of one of the pageants she was in. She is a self avowed classical violinist. When you see her perform a classical tune it is clear that that is really her element. So, that all explains the bizarre style of play, plastic smile and peculiar and forced motions during the performance linked to above.
I actually kind of feel sorry for her, because I'm sure she doesn't use this site, and if she did happen upon it... what must she think to see herself being bashed as a horrible "irish" fiddler? Sometimes I wonder why someone will give something they propose to not like so much attention? I think we can all agree on some points here, but why don't we leave this poor girl alone now.
Sorry Fiddlechick7 but nobody broke into her house and forced her to play an Irish tune for the camera, she is on the stage. She's being paid to do that and the criticism is more than justified. If she did read this post she might realize if you're going to perform to the public you should at least have some sort of clue what you're doing.
I just think there are better items to discuss and I am not a big fan of "bashing" no matter how opinionated we might be. There is a difference between constructive criticism (criticism that is asked for), criticism (maybe unasked for but still intelligent, objective, and not rude, and bashing (saying hurtful, demeanoning things based upon opinions, interpretations, etc. that are not constructive, don't "add" intelligent, sensitive commentary that adds to knowledge making in any way but is simply being mean, petty and peevish for the sake of it). I don't know. I think she could have done a better job by listening to some renditions of the tunes, but I don't feel it is necessary to run her through the wringer because someone posted a u tube video either.
that's not the wringer - that's just the run-of-the-mill slagging that goes along with playing Irish music. If she doesn't like it, she should take up Klezmer or Greek music -she'd probably be great at it

Has anyone got the sheetmusic for this?
Is it a good choice?
Thanks in advance for your help and support

Painful. Especially the plastered on smile - more attention to that than to the music. To each his own.

No, no, no! Don't use the sheet music! Learn it by ear. Listen to the MIDI and copy every nuance.

Re: Urgent ITM sheetmusic request
Since Drowsy Maggie is a very well-known tune - hackneyed, you might say. So isn't it quite likely that these "folkheads" would know it?
(On session.org, 2473 members have added it to their tunebooks - more than any other tune!)
Also, it's only a 16-bar tune - a set consisting of a couple of 32-bar tunes would be a better bet, IMHO ...
