The last surviving member of 'The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Maken' died today. Rest in peace Liam.
Of all the money that ere I had, I spent it in good company.
And of all the harm that ere I've done, alas was done to none but me.
And all I've done for want of wit, to memory now I cannot recall.
So fill me to the parting glass. Goodnight and joy be with you all.
I was lucky enough to spend a very late night and early morning talking and having a few drinks with Liam and the late Louis Killen after a Clancy Brothers concert in Brisbane Australia in the early 70s i think it was.
His career bloomed after the Clancy Brothers finished and his later solo albums and those with Tommy Maken are a great legacy.
Sounds like you had a good time with the late lamented Liam Clancy. However, I believe Louis Killen is not "late". He was supposed to be doing a gig with Mike Waterson last night at the Musical Traditions club in London.
Re: Liam Clancy RIP - End of a era. But not for Louis Killen !
I'll second everything about Liam Clancy, but yes, the news about Louis Killen is much better. He was in cracking form with Mike Waterson last night, the place was packed, oxygen was in short supply, and he did the North-East dialect version of the Christmas Story.
Somebody suggested privately that the reason he has moved back to England was that he wanted to have the security of the NHS in his old age - it must be difficult when you are a mainly itinerant performer, as all us folkies are, to be able to provide for your own healthcare. Much as I love many other aspects of life in the US of A, that would be one thing that worried me too. As it is, the dread spectre of "Socialism" gives me free local public transport, free prescriptions, and a cash advance for my winter heating bills. Can this be such a bad thing ?
A fine and decent man. My condolences to Kim, his children and the wider family circle. I last seen him in the Black Box here in Belfast, he was in cracking form. May he rest in peace with his celebrated brothers and Tommy Makem. RIP
There must be wonderful music and craic upstairs tonight! The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem were my intro to Irish music.
My parents brought me to a concert at Carnegie Hall when I was small but I still remember the music and fun! RIP

I'll say goodbye on this one, and the other. Two threads is barely enough.

Thanks for the music, and song, and concerts that were always a blast -- especially the ones you did when you had the original line-up. Rest in peace.

Apologies again.

Re: Liam Clancy RIP - End of a era.
Here's to you, Liam.
I cannot quite remember if it was hearing Liam, or the Chieftains, that first hooked me on this odd obsession. I'd say a tie.
Still the best I ever heard at what he does.
