Re: Best book and/or CD for beginners button accordian
Welcome Ben!
I can't recommend a book, but I can recommend you do lots of listening and talk to as many players as possible. Go to workshops and festivals if you can.
Beware, button boxes are so addictive they should come with a health warning.

Yes to Connolly. In particular, the explanations of ornaments are exemplary and the dvd is VERY easy to follow (cute moment with his son at the beginning, too)
Re: Best book and/or CD for beginners button accordian
I used Hanrahans and the John Williams CD
But it wasn't until John took me on that I learned anything. Get a good teacher if you can.
The book will get you acquainted with the instrument so you don't waste a teacher's time at the beginning. But ITM, and the box in particular is a person-to-person transfered occupation.
Re: Best book and/or CD for beginners button accordian
I would personally not recommend "The Box". Basically, it teaches little other than the basic layout of buttons. I never got any of the other teaching resources before I found a decent teacher... and then switched to the concertina (Which Ironically, considering it is a rarer instrument) has a better selection of books.

the hands-down best tutorial going is damien connolly's book/dvd......
if it's too inermediate/advanced for you, you might start with p.j. hernon's dvd and/or john williams'....
all of 'em are here on this page at buttonbox accordions....

Hi
I will recomend Damien Connolly's tutor, available at this site: http://www.damienconnolly.com/tutor.html
This one starts at the very beginning towards good session tunes. The dvd with John Williams is also good, but he only teach four or five tunes.
