Hello all
I've been playing whistles for many years either in D or C. I would like to play a little lower. I don't play in sessions, so the key is not so important, but I would like it to give me a different experience. My playing preference is for slow airs and more jazzy pieces. Help appreciated
I have just got a V3 Chieftain low F and absolutely love it. The low D is hard to play fast enough but the F is JUST RIGHT. Get one of them - they sound gorgeously groovy too.
My favourite whistle to play is a brass generation Bb. I have an excellent Sindt in D but I still enjoy playing the larger cheap whistle more. So try another Gen Bb or get yours tweaked.
cabers, interested in selling your Sindt? Had mine stolen last xmas (had it for 5 years before that). I'm still shopping for a replacement.
I have great fun playing the Chieftains low d and it always seems like someones selling a used one somewhere online...usually because they dont have the hands to play em.
I have alba A and G whistles, a Bleazey G flute and a Sweetheart F flute. All great fun for solo pieces or odd arrangements with friends outside the normal run of the session. The F flute is particularly useful for playing in the realm of flatter keys, i.e. F, BFlat (think clarinets, saxophones, klezmer etc.). G can often have the tunes reworked to play along with a normal D session and I like A and G for playing along with male singers.
The F flute is also fun for busking since it plays and projects so easily.
Thanks for all replies. I think I might well go for an F. It seems to have the majority vote. My Bb Gen was always a bad'un. I must have had it 30 years, and tried to work it, never successfully. I've a mind to try an Alba. I've listened to their sound clips and they're sweet (I'll have a look at the sweethearts too) Then catch me on the streetcorner sometime! Claws
A decent Bb Generation is a charm, and for accompanying some flat sets of pipes... From there ~ A & F on down... If you have the change, then one of Misha Somerville's might be a consideration? I believe he's only making Ds and Fs...

Generation B flat. but if money isn't the issue just take the leap and get a low D.

Re: Looking for a low(ish) whistle
I do actually have a Generation Bb which is virtually un-playable! Money is always the object, but I DO want a change of key Claws

Re: Looking for a low(ish) whistle
Why is the Bb unplayable? Something wrong with it or is it just crap?

A low F is always a good thing to have for just what you are stating. It's a great key to play in.

I've got a Susato A that I really like. Sometimes I play D tunes on the A just for a different sound.
