Re: Vote for choonz - irish music battle of the bands!

We already have some stiff competition - At First Light among others! However, there are a lot of pseudo-Irish bands giving Irish music a bad name so come and vote for us and spare our blushes! Thanks a lot. :)

Re: Vote for choonz - irish music battle of the bands!

In what way is this Irish? Oh I see. Pseudo Irish. What does that mean? Help!!

Re: Vote for choonz - irish music battle of the bands!

Fair play to you guys. Thanks for the link. I love that first tune you played. By John McCusker isn't it?

I love Beoga's video. Great fun:

Re: Vote for choonz - irish music battle of the bands!

Which continent are you on?

Choonz sounds as if it ought to be a totally obscure monastery in the Ukraine or somewhere, about to be overrun by seekers of the Holy Grail, the Ark of the Covenant, the missing tribes of Israel and the present King of the Merovingians, all of whom of course are there, along with Glen Miller, Lord Lucan and Shergar.

Re: Vote for choonz - irish music battle of the bands!

The fiddle player is based in Bristol, England. Well-known musician and teacher in the area.

Re: Vote for choonz - irish music battle of the bands!

So, Choonz are two English guys and a German playing a Scottish tune. Very nice it is too. No offence to anyone, but is there an option to vote for some Irish guys playing an Irish tune? Is there nobody from Killyleagh in this competition? Or even Downpatrick? What about Portaferry? Loads of good musicians there.

Re: Vote for choonz - irish music battle of the bands!

I wanted to vote for Athas because they are local to my state, but their choice of tunes was a really bad choice for a competition. Basically I'm not impressed when I know all three tunes in a set and I've only been playing for a few years. Drowsy Maggie/Mountain Road/ Tam Lin...whatever, nice Tam Lin setting

Re: Vote for choonz - irish music battle of the bands!

I stand open to correction, but I believe the two English guys in Choonz are in fact Scottish.

Re: Vote for choonz - irish music battle of the bands!

Not that it should matter of course. The tunes don't care about nationality.

Re: Vote for choonz - irish music battle of the bands!

So Durham is in Scotland then? Seriously though is the Strangford Lough beer any good? Should that not be the cue for a winning song or tune?

The AFL video is messed up.

Re: Vote for choonz - irish music battle of the bands!

My goodness, there is some tripe on there! Listening as I have to a good selection of what's there, it's enough to put you off that genre (I don't quite know what to call it) for life.
Whatever some may say about Choonz, at least I can consider voting for them rather than just wanting to spit.

Re: Vote for choonz - irish music battle of the bands!

Sorry, but I'd have to vote for beoga. Best coda. You're not a proper band unless you've got a good coda

Re: Vote for choonz - irish music battle of the bands!

"The future of our band depends on you guys" - what an awesome responsibility you place on us.

The future of my band depends on a little bit of advertising, a bit of word-of-mouth recommendation, some re-runs at annual events, and not succumbing to apathy and lassitude.

If I'd realised that we could have become happy and successful by winning a competition . . . . . maybe I would have done things differently.

Still - I dunno . . .

Re: Vote for choonz - irish music battle of the bands!

@Davey, Brian and Paul ...

Well, we all know you well down here in Bristol(UK), so votes from us are of course assured ...

(Mines's a pint, BTW .... ;-)

Showaddy, do you really think a future is worth anything unless you've played Vegas. Give the guys a break.

Re: Vote for choonz - irish music battle of the bands!

If that first / biggest link was Choonz, I like it - definitely for the first slow tune. The rest of it IMO was on the right side of the line that divides exhilarating furious crowd thrash from tedious and bloody awful furious crowd thrash. Maybe I just happen to be in the right mood.

I'm voting for them.

Re: Vote for choonz - irish music battle of the bands!

My band (Kilmaine Saints) is in 5th. There's some serious competition, unfortunately we were only given very short notice and didn't have a great quality video.

Not bad for a band only 8 months old. :)

Best of luck to all that entered!

Re: Vote for choonz - irish music battle of the bands!

To clear things up -
Paul and David are originally from Durham (England) but moved to Scotland. And are now based in England again!

Brian lives in Germany (well, technically) but is currently in Bristol.

And yep, as far as our future goes - we're all struggling financially. Getting the gig here would get us a decent amount of money, and perhaps a bit of exposure despite being on the 'wrong'continent!! - starting to think about 'proper jobs'otherwise - save us!!! :)

And the tunes: yep, mostly Scottish (tho you could argue Dinky's is Irish. - Donegal tune by Altan) Still, be surprised if all these aren't kicking around in sessions in the North of ireland. And the stuff we play is predominantly Irish and we can't play 'Scottish style'trad to save our lives - well I (Paul) can't anyway!

Anyway, i am really pleasantly surprised at the interest and grateful for the support!

Please keep the votes coming lads (and lasses!) - All the best.
Paul.

Re: Vote for choonz - irish music battle of the bands!

Maidens IV do it for me although The Rogues deserve a vote for unashamedly and honestly being unIrish. Is there nobody from Killyleagh in this contest? Killyleagh!!! Birthplace of David Healy (Northern Ireland 1 England 0)

Re: Vote for choonz - irish music battle of the bands!

Flatfoot 56 has the most votes so far, I have seen them, and they are definitely not as good as at least a couple of other groups on there.

Re: Vote for choonz - irish music battle of the bands!

Well I still don't like the name (not that it is any of my business) but as I said above I thought the music in the video was great, particularly the John McCusker tune.

It is a shame that your last thread turned so sour but that is the way with this site from time to time.

Anyway I see you are playing at Moniaive next year so I will probably end up meeting you all there.

Good luck with the competition. All the best,

Alistair
