The lovely folk at Cairdeas na bhFidiléirí done it again, bless 'em!!!
Vincent Campbell double CD ~ "The Purple Heather" ~ expected to be released for purchase by the 14th of December and will be available for direct purchase from Cairdeas na bhFidiléirí ~
So, what do you want for Christmas? This is on my very short list... Here's more from Cairdeas na bhFidiléirí on this welcome new recording ~
~ just over 2 hours of music ~ The 2 CD’s feature Vincent’s playing over a period of almost 50 years ~ 1962 to 2009. A wide variety of tune types and some of Vincent’s stories about the tunes are featured.
Vincent plays in the style of most of the players of older generations, playing mostly single tunes, instead of medleys, as a result of this there are a lot of tracks on this album, a total of 86 tracks, 43 on each of the two CD’s. ~ a booklet with good biographical information and notes on the music is part of the package.
Lovely people the Campbells, rich with music and dance. There are a few tracks on "The Brass Fiddle". I'm looking forward to the pleasure I know this will bring...
More of the great work this lot do, the Campbells are also featured on their DVD here ~
DVD: "Damhsaí Cúplaí Thír Chonaill / The Couple Dances Of Donegal:
Traditional Music and Dance from Donegal"
Here's more on this DVD, including a couple of clips, and the second one featuring Vincent Campbell ~ http://www.donegalfiddlemusic.ie/dvd-1.htm
Clip 1, the 'Highland', that's not the only way it was danced in Donegal...
Thanks for the memories. My dear wife says she's, if I go first, she's going to Donegal to spread my ashes. Lucky her, I'd rather we returned to Donegal before then...
Re: Wish Lists?! ~ Vincent Campbell's double CD!!!
Ah, that's great news. I have a private tape of Vincent that's fantastic if flawed slightly by that rough grit sandpaper audio we in the grapevine have to deal with occasionally. Perhaps with this release I'll have a real title for a number I christened "Scrapy Highland." Scrapes done with the bow - on purpose; forget the art music term for this. Pretty cool.
Also in the pipeline is a 2CD of Willie Clancy, from RTÉ. Peter Browne mentioned it on a Rolling Wave and confirmed this for me via email - on the broadcast he said by October I think, now it's due for December. http://www.rte.ie/radio1/therollingwave/1251860.html

It is indeed very good news and the Néillidh Boyle CD will also be available in early 2010.
I've seen Vincent play on many occasions, as well as his brother and nephew, but I'm well reminded of a comment made by a friend who attended the wedding of Glenn Comiskey (the former sound engineer at ITMA) some years ago in Inishowen. The reception took place in Ballyliffen and, having thoroughly involved himself in the post-nuptual boozing, my friend took to his bed but was awoken at around 5am by the sound of fiddles. "At that point," he remarked, "I realized that one could have just too many Campbells."
