Thank you all for your help, I just returned from Ireland, there are loads of great musicians there. I went to Tigh Coli's Pub in Galway, music there seven days and nights a week! Where they get their energy is amazing. All the musicians were very friendly and helpful. My favourite was on Wednesday night with Padraig Rynne, Mirella Murray and Kevin Dorris, those three play amazingly tight with beautiful tunes and great rhythm, nice combination of concertina and piano accordion. My second favourite was The Crane Bar on Sunday night with Johnny O Halloran and Gerry Whelan, button accordion and banjo. Ennis was very enjoyable too, a lot of great music there too. They are having a festival on from 6th to 10th Nov, wish I was there, fantastic line up including Dervish. Should be awesome. Wish I was in Ireland now!
Slan!
I arrived back in Australia yesterday after a five week dream holiday (three weeks in Ireland, two weeks in Scotland) and I wish I was back there too! (I so didn't want to leave )
As a concertina player, East Clare was a very special place for me, but Cork was also a real surprise (that's where I found my new concertina - definitely a case of being in the right place at the right time - everything fell into place for that one!
I must say thanks to everyone who have contributed a session to this site - it was fabulous to be able to nip down to the local internet cafe and hunt down sessions as we travelled about
We're already planning our return visit in 2005...
I was in Ennis on the Friday night before the Willie Clancy Week this summer. I asked at the hostel where the session was that night, and the receptionist listed about nine or ten different pubs. I chose the one nearest to the hostel, Cruises. There was a fiddler, a box player and a bouzouki player - all of a very high standard. I listened a while before taking the plunge and asking if they minded my joining in - to which the response was, "The more the merrier," or words to that effect. I knew I wasn't going to be at my best, as I was somewhat fatigued after having cycled across from Dublin. I made them aware of this, in response to which they merely offered me encouragement. It was not until I was in Ennis again several weeks later, looking at CDs in The Knotted Cord, that I realised I had been playing with Siobh
Hooley, I haven't seen Dodd (Kevin Dorris) since he upped sticks from Belfast and left for Galway a few years back. He's a marvellous bouzouki player and typical of the Galway scene in that there are many, many musicians who have moved there from other parts of Ireland just to play music. I think that's what makes Galway a little bit special.
