More East Galway Music, Please.

More East Galway Music, Please.

I have been enjoying recently the two recordings by The Kane Sisters.
Can anybody please recommend other recordings of the same style?

Thanks.

Re: More East Galway Music, Please.

Paddy Carty is a flute player from that area and has a very unique style.

Breda Keville - I second that Paddy Carty & Conor Tully recording too.

Here's a list of other Galway musicians:

Re: More East Galway Music, Please.

The Kane sisters are not from east Galway, but they're pretty good all the same. Conor Tully's recording with Paddy Carty has been unavailable for some time, but it seems to me the essence of east Galway music, if there be such a thing. I just visited the download link offered above; can this be legal? Conor Tully is still living. I wonder if he knows about it?

Re: More East Galway Music, Please.

The Kane sisters are actually from Connemara, which is far from East Galway.

Anyway, I also love Breda Keville's recording. Her sister Claire Keville has just release her solo recording, which features Breda's fiddle playing on some tracks: http://www.custysmusic.com/product-info.php?pid358.html

Claire have also made lovely recordings a few years ago: http://www.custysmusic.com/product-info.php?pid289.html Some nice obscure Fahey tunes are on the recording too.

There are not many flute players who plays in Paddy Carty's style, but Eddie Moloney's son Sean Moloney does. He has made 3 recordings so far, but they are hard to come by now. He recently updated his website: http://www.seanmoloney.com/index.html

Mike Rafferty's from East Galway, who plays in a very different flute style from that of Paddy Carty. His recent recording with Willie Kelly has been on my wish list: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/wkmrwdc

The Paddy Carty & Conor Tully links are legal, yes.

Re: More East Galway Music, Please.

Breda Keville has her own solo album - The Hop Down. Absolutely lovely and amazing music.

There's a link up at the ecotonal blogspot for Sean Ryan and Paddy Fahey... That might count, too.

Forgot to mention Martin Mulhaire and his lovely Warming Up disc with Seamus Connolly and Jack Coen. Beautiful East Galway music.

Re: More East Galway Music, Please.

The Tully/Carty recording was recently reissued. The "download" link above is not a download, but rather a pointer to places you can purchase it.

I'll second the recommendation for Mike Rafferty's stuff, especially the recent one with Willie Kelly.

While it's not actually East Galway (rather Clare), if you like Tully/Carty I'd recommend the Crotty/Cullinane CD from a few years ago.

Re: More East Galway Music, Please.

That's a photo of a Boehm clarinet on Paddy Carty's album cover!

Re: More East Galway Music, Please.

I think that's a clarinet - Dragut Reis says the same in his comments if you click the ceolalainn link above. It does look boehm-ish though.

Re: More East Galway Music, Please.

I once mistook P. Carty's flute for a boehm flute, but Kenny put me straight a couple of years ago. Carty's flute was actually a Radcliff system flute: http://www.oldflutes.com/articles/radcliff.htm

A music friend of mine has the flute and once brought it to the session I regularly go. I was very hestant to ask how much it cost.
