Internet Learning

Anyone know what happened to scoiltrad.com or madfortrad.com
I'm looking to move and wondered if these sites are useful for learning. I mean can you really learn from internet lessons?
Thanks for any reply,
C :)

Re: Internet Learning

It depends who's teaching. There was a bloke on here advertising his online whistle courses a couple of weeks ago and the general consensus was that it would be terrible. But then James Kelly teaches online and I bet that's bloody brilliant.

Re: Internet Learning

My twa farthings:

I suspect that common sense should, again, prevail -
obviously, some things you really cannot convey clearly without being in person.

For the student who can already play a good bit, there may be a lot of information and guidance that would work well.

But really basic introduction to any instrument? Might be dicey at best. I own a number of the MadForTrad series, and would not have wanted to take on any of them without already knowing the instrument up to an intermediate level technically.

Stylistically is a different story - they were pretty good for learning tunes and getting the swing of the stuff. But for that aspect of embracing ITM (as I believe you have so often suggested, Llig) why not just listen to Youtube, CDs, online tutorial sites, etc. and improve your ear the same way?

Or learn an assortment of standard tunes well, and go find a session?
:-)

Re: Internet Learning

I spent my first few years as a kid with nothing but my dad's records and the radio. But once I started getting out to play, the diffenece was exponential.

MG
I've talked to a few people who take lessons from James Kelly and I've talked to him myself although I haven't signed up for lessons as of yet. But the general consensus is, yes, from someone like Kelly you can't go wrong. He also has a very good system in place. Thorough, meticulous. Well organized. He's the real deal.

Re: Internet Learning

I have and am taking lesson from him, excellent, if you wnat the real Mc Coy.

He's a pleasure to listen to and his philsophy on Irish music is extremely solid.

Go for it!

Re: Internet Learning

The scoiltrad lessons were pretty decent, at least as far as teaching you a tune, and some of what to do with it. But I don't think it was a great way to learn the basics of your instrument. And I don't think it worked as a business model, so they disappeared several years ago.

But when you say "looking to move", do you mean "looking to move to a different kind of music", meaning that you already have proficiency on an instrument, but you want to try learning Irish? Or do you mean "looking to move to a new area that has no Irish musicians to learn from"? In all cases, learning in person from people who play the music is going to be preferable to learning from a book, website, or even recordings.

And as llig already pointed out, the best learning comes from getting out and playing with other people. That's difficult to do in some places, but Irish music is more prevalent than a lot of people think, and you might be surprised how easy it is to find other people that play if you know where to look...

Re: Internet Learning

He is the man from Capel Street /Dorset Street intersection, and in the opinion of a great many knowledgeable people , the greatest living exponent of the fiddle playing Irish Traditional Music today ( and yes, he would and should be equated with the great Bobby Casey)
